I see Reconditioned guns for sale on Gun Broker. What does that mean?

    Restored usually by refinishing wood and/or metal (blueing). Sometimes replacing parts and/or recheckering. In many cases it doesnt enhance an older guns value and often even diminishes it. Sometimes its just fixing up a gun that you like regardless of its value.

    A recondition gun is typically a handgun and most likely a former police service pistol. Typical examples might be a Glock 17. Police Departments often update their firearms and may go from 9mm to .40 caliber and if that happens they might be left with anywhere from a few to a few hundred pistols that they no longer have use for and these are typically sold. While some of these trade ins go to dealers and are resold as-is, larger departments who make their purchases direct from the manufacturers often trade in their older guns on new models. After the new guns ship the manufacturer will take the trade ins, look them over, clean them up, possibly update them to current specifications, repackage the guns and then sell them as reconditioned, often with a warranty. These reconditioned guns can save you some money but deep discounts are rare. It is always worth taking a look around for ex-police guns that are resold directly by dealers in as-is condition because prices on these guns can be extremly low and in many cases the guns are in very good to excellent condition.

    The gun I am looking at is a Remington 700 SPS 223 cal.. Looks new in the box.
    Seller states it was sent back to the factory and comes with a factory warranty.

    A few of the top handgun manufacturers offer 'factory reconditioned' pistols, such as SIG's CPO program (Certified Pre-Owned). These used to be identifiable on dealer's shelves by a blue band wrapped around the grip, but it's now red.

    These pistols are excellent buys, with most coming back into SIG's hands as low round count police trade-in guns to start with. They're each totally disassembled, completely refinished, every part is closely inspected and replaced if necessary.

    I'm a SIG certified armorer and actually recommend these to people looking to purchase a SIG. For 99.9% or more of shooters they're as good new - and less expensive.

    EDIT: Sorry about that. I was still pecking when you updated that you were looking at a Remington. [:D]

    Don't feel bad, I was doing the same thing. A little more information up front can save a lot of needless typing!

    Some these reconditioned guns were returned to the factory for various warranty issues--A few serious, but mostly not. Once the guns come back to the factory the problems are corrected and the gun, which is now used because it has been sold at retail, is sold as reconditioned. Most of these returns were hardly ever fired and might have come back for something as slight as a poorly fitted stock. Once that issue is corrected, the gun is resold and you can end up with a virtually new gun with a warranty and at a nice discount.
