I became an owner of an 03 thru an estate, would like some info.
The rifle is marked US Rock Island Arsenal Model 1903 and has
ser # 403 xxx

    wondering about approx mfg date and value for rifle in fair to good condition It is all original no modifications, sorry do not have capability to upload pictures

    Manufactured between 1920-1922. See if there's a date on the barrel near the front sight. If you can't post pictures, go to the auction side and check closed auctions (sold only - not unsold)for an approximate value. In fair to good condition, probably in the $500 range.

    Thanks for your help I looked by the sight, there is a stampning there that says S A then a cartouche then what appears to be 11-30

    Pezhead, the cutoff number for Rock Islands is 286,506. Your'e right to bring it up but you could have satisfied your own curiosity in 10 seconds with google and not necessitated wasting a response, plus a response to your response.

    Assuming original condition, value could range from $400 for a real beater up to thousands of dollars for an all matching truly mint example. Most in the $500-$600 rangeas Spider suggests.

    azjack, The condition and originality of the rifle are critical in determining value. I concur with the value range that jonk suggested. It is almost certainly a rebarreled rifle (1930 barrel on a 1920-1922 receiver). Other exchanged parts can cut the value. Does the stock have a pistol grip or is straight? A complete serial number might allow someone to do a check of Springfield Research Service data to get some history of the rifle. A slim chance but sometimes information such as what unit or post it was shipped to can be found.

    We all agree that pictures are most useful but some answers to your questions can be provided by questions and answers. Unfortunately the limit of 10 responses on this forum precludes that method from being much help.
