Model 1911
I need some help on this gun. My Grandpa give it to me and he said a friend gave it to him in 1943 and it was used then. On the slide the marking is. Model of 1911 U.S. ARMY. the other side is.Patented Apr20, 1897,Sept9, 1902, Dec19, 1905, Feb14, 1911 and Aug19, 1913.
But there no ss#. I put a pic but I don't know how. Any IMFO would be helpfull. Thanks

A lot of the 1911 and 1911A1 military Colts that were used during the two World Wars, were obtained by the 5 finger discount method. Some of the misguided folks that came into possession of them, though that they couldn't be traced if the removed the serial number. If your Grandpa's pistol is one of these it's a big trouble gun for anybody who has it in their possession. You play your cards wrong you could wind up in the federal slammer with sugar bugger bubba as your cellmate. 0 -
The ss# was not remove there no mark on the gun. To so the ss# was remove 0 -
If that's the case it would be best if you posted quality photos of the Colt.

Hello along with the above mentioned 5 finger discount there were a number of 1911 Pistols that were so called LUNCH BOX pistols these were taken out of the plant ONE PIECE AT A TIME . I have one with out a serial + the frame I can prove NEVER had a serial number. I can also prove had the frame was made in 1918 because of the grip frame machining that was different then any other year . Before 1934 Pistols did not have to have a serial number . So I have a letter from BATFE stating it is legal for me to own the pistol.Now if your frame was made before 1934 and you can prove it never had a serial Number you MAY be able to get BATFE to write you a letter. If you send me detailed in focus pictures of the frame with grips removed I may be able to tell from the machining what vintage your pistol id . If the pistol is Post 1934 than I would remove all parts from the frame and remove the intact slide assembly . Then I would crush the frame with hammer ETC and sell all the other parts . If is shows any attempt to remove a serial number that was once there then do the same remove ALL parts and crush frame. It is legal to have all parts except the frame no matter what about the frame.
edit It is a 1911 frame not a 1911A1 so that is good news. if you have a good Dial Caliber we need the width of the frame in about 4 different locations to the nearest one thousands of an inch let us know if you can do this and I will try to help with the 4 locations0 -

If I were you I'd take Mr Snows post seriously. A firearm with the serial # removed is bad JUJU. It could have been removed and then polished out so you cannot even tell it was there.
Just to stir things up a bit I might add that a friend of mine has had the DOD (yes an official from the Dept of Defense) confiscate US Govt marked property out of his gun safe and advised him that ANYTHING marked US Property is exactly that and can be confiscated by DOD at any time. My friend (a law abiding citizen)did NOT get his property back and had to spend time in a coutroom as well.0 -
IMO the serial number has definitely been illegally removed. Some remnants are still visible. 0
