Need help. I.D. info S&W 242 38 S&W Titanium??

I just took in a S&W 242 (no mistake...that's the mod #), one of the S&W series of ScTi revolvers. It's the two-tone grey like that series and it's a 7-shot enclosed hammer. I've never seen one and I can't find one for sale anywhere.

I was told it was made only one year. I know we're not talking rare and expensive, but can anyone fill in the story of the gun anymore than I already know!?

    Smith toyed around with titanium guns for a little while, and eventually came to the conclusion that they're mostly not worth the effort.

    Titanium is lighter than steel and even more corrosion resistant than stainless steel, but its also significantly more expensive, harder to machine (also adding to manufacturing costs), and more brittle.

    So while there is potentially some advantage in having CERTAIN parts made of titanium to save weight (eg the cylinder, crane, barrel, etc) with lots of parts either titanium isn't suitable at all (eg springs, hammer) or simply not worth the bother/expense (eg screws).

    So that's why Smith dropped the Ti guns.

    In terms of THIS gun, Smith put them out only from '89-91, effectively one production year.

    Conceptually, I think the gun is sound. You have a medium frame hammerless (DA-only, snag-resistant) 7-shot snubnose. Its a reasonable choice for the few individuals who prefer a lightweight belt-carried concealed carry revolver, since you get two more shots than the typical J-frame snubnose.
