COLT 1909 U.S. NAVY: .45 Colt Caliber revolver with a 5 ?" barrel with Colt DA 45.,COLTS FT FA MFG CO HARTFORD CT. USA PAT'D AUG 51884 JUNE 51900 JULY 41905. It has U.S. Navy and Anchor on the butt with 45DA NO. 715. The serial number is 52715 and I don't know which year it was manufactured.     Thanks for the information and recommendation. Does anyone know the value of this revolver? I've been told the Navy Colt 45 DA Model 1909 is very hard to find. Does anyone know anything about the Navy issueance of this weapon?

    Other then the chipped grip, it appears to be in Very Good original condition. Very rare and something a collector of U.S. Navy handguns would be really interested in. Your probably looking at a couple of thousand at least. In a well publicized auction with lots of bidders probably more then that. Only thing out of the ordinary is that the S.N. is higher then the known range of 1909's that were bought by the Army and Navy.

    I was doing some research and I've learned that on December 17th, 1908, the War Department placed an order with Colt for 6000 New Service revolvers, Caliber .45. They were designated "Colt Double-Action Revolver, Caliber .45, Model 1909. The military number stamped on the butt corresponds to the Colt Serial number on the frame in the crane out. In all 19, 503 revolvers were delivered to the Army. THe guns were consecutively numbered from 30001 to 49503. The Navy and USMC also purchased the Model 1909 but in different serial number ranges than the 19, 503 Army guns. How can I find out how the Navy numbered there serial number? Also can anyone give me a little history on the New Service Model 1909 Navy model? I've also learned there were not as many of these revolvers sold to the Navy.
