Seating dome shaped primers
I have 1,250 Alcan large rifle primers that were given to me. They are dome shaped--not flat like todays convential primers. I remember that the old Herter's press that I started with (long since given away) had both flat and concave primer posts for both types. I have several priming systems; RCBS, Hornady, Lee. Does any firm make a priming post for these primers?

Not any more, they don't. I also have a good quantity of domed primers. I seat them with a now-standard flat punch, which simply flattens the domed part. Be sure to not apply too much pressure; you can't seat them as firmly as regular primers. A hand primer is ideal. Just press them in until you barely feel a bit of added resistance.
Haven't had a misfire yet.0 -
My old RCBS press came with 4 punches, small and large in flat and domed. I still have them in my reloading drawer.
Know anyone that has a box of older press parts?0 -
I got all kinds of old parts for a Lyman All American Turret press what do you need. Also on subject, like what has already been said, be gentle with a hand primer, seat them fully and make sure that the mouth of the carrtridge case is pointing away from your face so if you do get a adc their is no danger just a little noise. 0 -
Some time back I got a load of 1930s vintage 30-06 brass, some of which I wanted to turn in to 8mm Mauser. I didn't want to resize it with the primers in, worried that the lube might get into the primers and ruin them.
So I punched 'em out with a universal decapper and later re-used them (they all went bang).
The idea that I should use a concave priming ram never entered my mind, I never heard of them- and yes, they were rounded primers.
They all seated and went bang just fine.0 -
Just use your Dremel tool with a grinder or cutoff disc and dish your priming post. 0 -
Ambrose I have both a small and large concave priming post for a RCBS press that has the priming arm. Both are brand new for the cost of shipping ($2) they are yours. 0 -
