17 hmr..22 magnum
hi guys,,question for the masterminds.....:)...what would happen if you fired ( i havent done so) a 17 hmr in a 22 magnum mini gun with a 1 5/8 inch barrel ( n.a.a )...your imput is greatly appreciated,,thansk alot..:)

Nothing happens. Both are rimed cartridges, that headspace on the rim. The 17 cal bullet is much smaller in diameter then the .22. It won't be stabilized by the rifling in the .22 barrel. Probably keyhole shortly after exiting the barrel. 0 -
Hard to say what could happen but just like shooting a 243 in a rifle chambered for 308 you will not blow up the firearm with a smaller bullet it will not seal the bore and in some cases it may not even get the bullet out the end of the barrel so IMHO no harm no foul on a mini pistol but I still would not fire the wrong shell in any fire arm on purpose. 0 -
What would happen?
You'd be firing a .17 bullet through a .22 bore.
The hot gases that should push behind the bullet to propel it would instead partially pass around it, wasting much of their potential.
In other words, while the bullet would probably still be pushed out the gun, it wouldn't be going nearly as fast as it would from a gun with the correct barrel diameter.
The .17 caliber bullet won't be gripped by the .22 caliber rifling, and wouldn't spin to stabilize. So the bullet would start to tumble wildly right after leaving the muzzle.
In short, you'd probably end up with a slow inaccurate .17 caliber projectile. Would it blow up the gun? Probably not, but you're not likely to hit anything past more than a few feet away, and if you do hit anything, you probably won't do much damage.
As a secondary matter, these magnum rounds were designed for use in rifle barrels. Out of short pistol barrels like your NAA revolver, under NORMAL conditions, much of the powder is wasted creating a bright flash of powder burning out the muzzle. I
In the case of this .17 caliber bullet, I think this effect would be even more exaggerated as unburned or incompletely burned powder would be much more free to blow around the small projectile.0 -
While an assailant would probably survive the bullet, he would die from the 3rd degee burns from the ball of flame at the muzzle.... 0 -

I inadvertently fired several 25-06 rounds in a 1903 Springfield (30-06). I was firing it indoors at a paper target about 25 yards away, and nothing happened other than the group was at least several inches in diameter even at such a short range, and most of the rounds were keyholing. 0
