Winchester 94 - tell me what I've got.....
Hi guys, I'm new here. I recently inherited a Winchester 94-30 WCF Ser.# 1484501. I'm guessing late 40's? The old fella that left it to me bought it for his wife to go deer hunting with him...she hated hunting and I'll bet the gun hasn't been fired a dozen times. It's in great shape, a few nicks and wear from age but that's about it. It has an old (original?) red rubber "White Line" recoil pad on the butt that is now hard as a rock from age. Should I replace the recoil pad? Can I replace it with the stock steel buttplate? The end of the stock is perfectly straight, so does that mean it was sawed off to install the recoil pad? Is it possible to add a saddle ring to this gun without destroying it's value? This is a nice gun and I don't want to screw it up. Tell me what I've got here. Thanks

"Is it possible to add a saddle ring to this gun without destroying it's value?"...........it has no value as a 'collector' as the stock has been cut to add the recoil pad. It does have value as a good 'shooter', so changing the recoil pad or adding a saddle ring will not hurt value any. 0 -
a picture will tell if the stock has been cut (butchered) to be a little more blunt. forget the saddle ring .it should be a flatband model with that serial # making it worth more (the front barrel band is flat).don't mess with the original finnish on the metal or wood. you might find a stock metal buttplate here or on ebay and if the wood has not been cut go ahead or leave it as is . a flatband gun will sell quick hope the wood was not cut. BERT will have a precise mfg. date on the serial #. 0 -
It is an early 1948 production flat-band carbine.
The value will depend on whether or not the butt stock was cut down to install the recoil pad. If it was not cut, then an original checkered steel butt plate can be re-installed with little negative effect on the value.0 -

The pictures are not clear enough to determine if it is the original stock, or if it has been cut. Please measure the length of the stock (minus the added spacer plate and recoil pad). 0 -
The stock measures 13 5/16" across the bottom (straight line from the edge of the wood to the receiver right above the trigger.) The butt measures 4 9/16" (not super accurate without taking the recoil pad off. 0 -
If your gun has a 14" pull (from trigger to end of stock) then its most likely a replacement stock, which would exlplain a poor wood to metal fit( I think, cant quite tell from the photos) and the lack of the reddish winchester tint. That would put the overall length of pull of this gun right around 16" by the looks of it. The owner must have been very tall. Bert can shed more light on this. 0
