SHTF shotgun...tax return
Can't put it in the bank...don't trust 'em. My safe is full of things "I had to have". Now it's time to invest in things "I need to have". So...if you had $500.00 to invest in the best "SHTF shotgun", what would you buy[?] Thanks.

I would buy two used Remington 870 12 ga, 1 with a slug bbl. They always work & they made a bejillon of them!

You should see the smile on my face! Cool...yes. Deadly...yes. Tactical...no. Wouldn't you want someting a little more "quiet"? 0 -
wild bunch guy...I keep ending up thinking like you. Why buy some fancy getup when I coud just grab the guns I already have? Guess I just want more...a specialty gun for when things go really bad.
Any value to having ghost sights and extended mags tubes and fancy coatings?0 -
More of a Mossber 500 fan myself over the 870. $500 will buy you a new gun plus several cases of ammo. 0 -
I gotta cast my vote for the Mossberg 500.

Personally aside from reliability, I think weight is the most important factor in a shotgun. I used to have a 20" 9-shot mossberg with all the bells and whistles next to my bed, but all it did was sit there and collect dust. Because when something goes bump, or you hear that strange car pulling down the drive at 3am, and the adrenaline is not going because people always mistaken your drive for the neighbors, you don't have a tendancy to wanna lug that heavy sucker around the house.
A pistol grip 1300 with an 18" barrel and the standard length magazine tube if you want something easy to maneuver in close quarters and light weight enough that you won't mind lugging it around the house in the middle of the night when your dead tired. In fact aside from a short barreled "paper" gun, its probably the shortest, lightest repeating shotgun you can get. Heavy dove shot is just as effective as buckshot at room distance according to the corner, its cheap and won't hurt your wrist as bad.0 -

What do you specifically mean when you say "SHTF". Are you expecting a raid on your house from 20 Hells Angels who think you have done them wrong, Government collapse with rioting and looting, or something going bump in the night. Personally, I have a 6 shot Mossberg 500 with a synthetic stock and a 18.5" IC slug barrel with rifle sights. It sits in my safe as my "bump" gun is a revolver. If you want the "cool" factor, why not get a 500 with the barrel of your choice and one of the KNOX 10 round drum conversion kits. I have no personal experience with them as far as function, but they do look cool. 0 -
Mossberg 500 or 590 and a bunch of ammo 0
