AR 15 Front Sight Assembly

I have a 20" stainless steel barrel with a flat top rail. I would like to mount a scope for varmit shooting. The front sight assembly looks like it will interfer with the scope optics. How do you remove it? It may hold on the handguards. Or can I saw off the top?

    You need a 1" riser to put a scope at the right height for your eye to line up with it. Any scope over a four power will not show the front sight. The gas tube is in the sight mount, and you can replace it with a low one if you want the sight out of the way. OR saw the top off if you want. IT DOES hold the handguards on, BUT the gas block is MUCH more important [;)]

    If you take off the front sight, you need to put something back in its place, atleast a gas block being that is also what holds your gus tube in place. Those 2 pins you see above the sling swivel and bayonet lug and punch them out with a punch. That will loosen it off the barrel, then punch out the smaller pin that holds the gas tube in place above the pin you took out above the bayonet lug. That will take care of the front sight. You may also need to remove the flash hider.

    As stated the front sight is also the gas block.

    Also as stated with most properly mounted scopes of 4x power the sight will not be seen.

    If you dont want the front sight there you have 2 choices and it will depend on you what you want. My buddy was in a similar situation and never planned on using open sights with his. He decided to cut the sight off above the gas tube. It was free, it works, and looks fine.

    The other option is to take off the flash hider, knock out the pins that hold the front sight to the barrel, remove the pin the holds the gas tube on. Then you have to find the replacement gas block you would like and put it back on.

    You can saw off the sight above the gas tube and clean it up or you can remove it and replace it with a low profile type.

    Basically to remove the front sight you need to unscrew the FH, remove the taper pins that hold on the front sight then tap off the base. The gas tube will come with it. Then remove the gas tube from the front sight base, attach it to the new gas block and reassemble, slide the new gas block back on and you're done.

    It's not difficult - the taper pins can be a pain and must be tapped out left to right - but first time around it can be a pain. I've done a half dozen or so, gets easier. If you're never going to use the front sight cutting off the top is easiest. Adding a riser might be the way to go though. Keeps your gun in one piece.

    Typically a scope 5X or above will generally not show the sight even if it does look like it's in the way.

    Don't waste time with the front sight---get a set of see-thru mounts for your scope, unless you are going to run over it with a truck, this are all you will need, B-Square makes a nice set, this will raise it to the right heigth---then go shooting!!!
