Mauser C96 Broomhandle

We've got a Mauser C96 that we'd like to list for sale on GB but we know very little about these and are wondering if anyone can help with identification details?

    I have the possibility to buy a Mauser C96 from a friend that is in need of cash. He'd sell it for $1000. It is in good if not great condition and completely original and all the numbers match. I can track the owners for 40 years. It comes with the holster. but the holster number noes not match the guns. Is 1000 $ a fair price?
    Additionally the holster can be used as a stock. Does this make the C96 a SBR and do I need special documentation and a Tax stamp?

    If it's factory original with holster stock, $1000 is a very descent BIL kind of deal. The feds have made it legal for collectors to have holster stocks with their broomhandles without a SBR stamp, as long as the stocks are original. Although I have personally seen a bunch of folks with repo stocks trying to sell them with broomhandles at shows.

    I'm pretty sure that it is an original stock. The gun was in a safe for at least 40 years. My friend said he believes his father in law purchased it through the NRA. shortly after the war.

    I forget how it's actually worded, but i think a repro stock is legal as well, as long as it's a close copy of an original.
    the serial number of the stock should be on the metal, on the underside of the forward end.
    even a numbers matching stock doesn't ensure it's original though. like rufe said, lots of repro's, some with matching numbers are being sold out there.
