Youth .22

Looking to get a .22 for my sons. Prefer a single shot or magazine fed bolt. Let me know your ideas. My two boys of shooting age are 8 and 7.

    Stevens model 15 bolt action single shot. No longer made, so you'll have to go used. But they were made as boys rifles and are very accurate. Plus you should easily be able to find one for less than $100.

    I believe that CZ makes a nice one. Comes with a shorter stock and I believe you can put a full size one one later. Come with a single load mag block and a 5 or 10rd mag. All the reports I have seen about the CZ's are good.

    I bought my son an Anschutz Woodchucker for his 10th birthday in 1985. They are no longer made but they can be found. Its a tac driver and uses a detachable magazine, either 5 or 10 rds.

    My wife liked his gun so much I found one for her about 10 years ago. I believe these days all the kid size .22s are single shots. Ruger makes a shorter size version of the 10-22, but its an semi-auto.

    My kids shoot a Savage Cub single shot. It's inexpensive and accurate beyond their skill level. The stock is short and has a rear peep sight.

    There are several out there on the market, both new and used. The Anschutz Woodchucker, and Achiever are both good ones if you can find them, as is the CZ 452 Cadet model. Thompson Center just announced that they have a youth model that looks just like daddy's Encore, that will be arriving soon. For that matter, there is the Contender Carbine, and/or the Encore that they can grow with. There are the older Steven's favorates, and some newer ones that are falling block type single shots, but light and accurate.

    There are so many options.

    Don't forget the multitude of Winchester and Remington bolts; single shot and others. You can always put in a single shot block, though most easily feed single handed with the mag. in place.

    Started my daughter out at 7 with a Chipmunk single shot bolt. Accurate and easy to use.

    Marlin Model 15Y . They don't get anymore solid !

    Unfortunately, I don't think they make the 15Y anymore- My grandson is now shooting his Dad's 15Y. You might look at the Mossberg Half-pint.
