Mini-14

I did not want to hi-jack the other thread.
Did Ruger ever sell a factory folder mini-14 that was not a GB model? I have seen a mini-14 with what appears to be a factory folding stock with no bayonet lug on the barrel. The front sling attachment was on the side suggesting that this is a factory folding stock. Did somebody have a GB folder and just changed the barrel out?

    Any thoughts on the Mini-14? I am considering trading for one and wonder if anyone has an opinion, good or bad.

    great shooter for what it is. prefers factory magazines and brass cases. negatives are usually compliments of user expectations. jmo

    I have owned one--the cons are they are not particularly accurate compared to an AR style rifle. They are a decent enough gun for casual plinking and self defense though. The other con I found was that any magazines over 20 rounds usually gave poor feeding results no matter who made them. Ruger does offer a 20 round factory mag now in addition to the 5 rounder. Supposedly the new Mini-14 Target version is as accurate as the AR's.

    I know a guy that has one of the new ones, which he bought a year or year and a half ago. He says you can keep five shots in a snoose can lid at 100 yards.

    I do not have any expectations beyond it being a good shooter with
    no problems such as jamming, feeding problems and rapid wear. The
    mini has an ATI folder and the factory stock.

    Factory mags yes, Brass vs Steel they will shoot both with little problem. Mini's typically eat anything, and you can shoot either .223 rem or 5.56X45.

    They aren't accurate, and aren't worth the price! Go with one of many good AR's.

    They are a bit more accurate than and just as dependable as the GI M1 carbine. I think so long as you consider the Mini along those lines you'll be fine. The newer ones are more accurate than the older "pencil barrel" version, personally I wouldn't buy the older version. I say that from experience and not 2nd hand info. The new version with a shorter, heavier barrel is out there to be bought so I'd stick with that model, not the old.

    Buy factory original magazines or very well made aftermarket. Even if you buy good aftermarket it's a bit hit or miss. I think I have about 20 aftermarket ones and maybe 8 factory hi caps - all the factory mags work fine, some of the aftermarket ones are hit or miss.

    I have owned a couple and I liked them. They are not a accurate as a ar and you need factory mags or you will have feeding problems. I would buy a ar unless you get the mini cheap! Tim

    Only cons I think of and pretty much everyone else already stated in one way or another... You won't be shooting any rifle competitions with it, and magazines are a little more expensive than AK or AR mags.

    On the pro side, its ultra reliable, more so than an AR, and its more accurate than an AK.

    If you are looking for best gun for the money and want more accuracy than the Mini 14 and cost less than an AR 15 type rifle look at the AR180B. My 2 cents [8D]

    It is new, never fired, can get it for $500.00. It has the ATI 6
    position stock which I do not like, 161/8" barrel, has three 20 rnd
    clips. I have to buy it today if I want it. I live in West Texas, the oil field is full of people that will spend a $1000.00 one day
    and sell the item next day for half or less. Checked the local dealers, the cheapest new one I found was $765.00
