Marlin 39A ?

Looked at 3 today.1st one had checkering on the pistol grip and forearm and on the left side of the receiver there were 2 holes besides the four pins that should be there,they were up by the forearm...possibly for a scope mount?And shrouded front sight,$395. 2nd one was in 22mag very rare accordding to the dealer,decent condition had some rust spots on the receiver and some one took some steel wool to it,didn't work well.$550

3rd one said it was pre warning on the tag,think he met pre war? in excellent condition.$625

I don't know anything of the 39A,you guys here got my interest in them and these are the first ones I have run across. Need opinions please. THANKS HD

    I know the marlin book states that one year, early 50s sometime, the 39A was drilled and tapped on the barrel for a side mount scope. Does anyone know what year that was and what the letter prefix was for that year. Thanks

    The pre-war rifle if in good condition will hold it value as long as you take care of it and shoot as well as a new rifle unless it has a bad bore. The magnum rifle will cost more to shoot if you have a specific ues for the extra power buy it, I would offer less due to the damage. The modified newer rifle seem to be priced right for a shooter.

    Never heard of a 39 in .22 Mag.
    Maybe an 1894?
    If you need the extra power of the Mag., you might consider it. The ammo is a LOT more expensive, though, as has been pointed out.
    Check on the auction side to see how these prices compare. They seem high to me, but I bought my last 39 a whole bunch of years ago and EVERYTHING seems high to me these days![:D][:D]

    Glad the dies are doing their job!! Thanks for the update. Have finally "clicked" with my own .308, but it's a custom Sako bolt, so I'm getting along fine with the standard dies![:D]

    Its a 39 for sure.Dealer said it was rare.Think I'll go back tomorrow and do some real scruitinizin[:D].Oh thanks again for the .308 small base dies I got from you I have put them to good use

    The two holes are factory driled and tapped for a receiver peep sight

    9422 in 22 mag, sure- but never seen or heard of a 39a in 22 mag.

    I've been doing some research and you are right.Everything I've found says the 39a was never made in 22 mag.So i'm going back tomorrow and really check this out.

    I have a few and sold a bunch over the years, and never heard of one in a 22 mag either...
    It's the best lever action 22 ever made IMHO..........

    I have just one now and love shooting it. I have looked at and bought and sold a few 39A's over the years and have never seen one in 22mag. One forum was saying that it is not strong enough for 22mag. I do not know if tht is true or not. But if it would handle 22mag I am sure they would have chambered it and they would have been a good seller for Marlin.

    Wouldn't that pre-war be a 39 instead of a 39A?
