cz 97B
Took my pistol to a local Gunsmith, because the one magazine I used loaded with 10 rounds in my concealed weapon class no longer holds the slide open after the 10th round is ejected. All I got from him was that the model 97 was not as well made as the 75 etc etc. The problem has something to do with the magazine as my new one works fine but has never had a shell placed in it other than fake snaps. I can get it to work normally by putting upward pressure on the empty magazine and cycle the slide and it stays open as it should. Also the mag in question has a bit more verticle travel when inserted and locked. Any suggestions

The 97B is made just as well as the other CZ products - such a shame so many in the gun world can't say those three little words "I don't know". Is the magazine that doesn't work a CZ factory or an aftermarket?
Aftermarket mags for the full sized EAA Witness generally work too, but I bought one that has simply not worked since day one.
Have you checked out the gun by removing the slide, inserting the slide stop and seeing the interaction of the mag and the slide release?0 -
No sir I have not, but I will. I now know after using my old mechanics rule that the mags are not the same. The design is diferent and although it fed the rounds OK I suspect the newness of the mag that came with the gun may have held it in place by friction as the release is way off and allows the mag to slide about 1/16th down. The mag that came with the gun hag MG-TA45_10 stamped on it with the name Megar or something similar. If I am right getting the right mags will solve the problem. What do you think? 0 -
My TZ, forerunner to the Witness, started doing the same thing. The problem was that the slide stop had worn a grove into the plastic follower. So the slide was no longer held back 0 -
Get some new or used factory magazines as suggested several times already along with another gunsmith. The factory magazines have a solid metal base, black follower, made in italy on front, right side witness holes marked 5 and 10, left side marked 45 near the base and MEC-GAR with logo. Tanfoglio mags also work well as the latch holes are proper though the base isn't as thick and the gap bothers some 97B fans. Don't forget to check your loaded chamber indicator screw. 0 -

DFLETCHER...I boght a bunch of "witness" magazines from a guy in Alaska (flebay)..They turned out to be aftermarket and would not hold open on empty...I wound up obtainig factory followers from EAA and replacing all of the bum ones...They work fine now...

Unfortunately the bad one happens to be as you described[ However I am getting a couple of new mags and hope to talk to Mike at CZ Monday to see what I can do to prevent this problem if possible.quote]Originally posted by lts

Magazines springs loose strength, followers get worn, and feed lips get bent out of shape. It happens, no big deal, throw the magazine away and order a new one. I've had bad or worn magazines in just about everything from 1911's to AK's. It just happens. Sometimes you can salvage parts or rebuild it if the body and feed lips aren't damaged, but if your lifes gonna depend on it you want the best you can get which is usually just a new magazine.
Even though they are expensive, get factory magazines if you can afford it. Mec-Gar makes good magazines, but if your going to carry the gun, you don't want anything aftermarket. I'd rather have two functioning factory magazines than 4 malfunctioning aftermarket mags. Not saying the Mec-Gars will malfunction, again they make great mags. Just implying a school of thought from prior experience.
The CZ97 is a great gun, and from what I've seen they are totally on par with the CZ75 no matter what your gunsmith says.0 -
