Way to tell type of barrel at pawn shop?

So I'm interested in buying what I'm told (by the pawn shop owner) is a cantilevered rifled barrel for an 1187 Supermag from a pawn shop. However, the only markings on the barrel are the type of shells it will shoot (2 3/4", 3") and that its made by Remington. The barrel was brought in to the pawn shop with an 1187 Supermag and original turkey barrel, so it might be safe to assume that the barrel will work. However, I'm concerned 1) that the orignal owner may have been mistaken about the rifled barrel being ablt to fit the Supermag; and 2) that the gun may have some sort of damage as a result of using an incorrect barrel.

So, is there any way to tell what type of barrel this is? If it's the wrong type of barrel, and the orignal owner used it on the Supermag, would it cause damage to the gun or the barrel or both? Thanks.

    i was told that you can use a super mag barrel on a standard receiver but you can only use 2-3/4 or 3 inch shells not the 3-1/2 in shells,
    which ever is standard in you receiver, same is true if tou have a 2-3/4 inch receiver you can use a 3inch barrel on it but you can only use 2-3/4 inch shells

    A customer had a similar problem a while back. I seem to remember that the legnths of the tang, that fits into the receiver, differ. He had to order a new barrel as they were not interchangeable.

    What might work: Take the barrel off your shotgun and leave it at home, get permission from the shop owner to bring in your receiver, case it, take it to the shop and see if the barrel fits. If it fits, you're good to go with the proper shells. If not--not!
