Buying a "Good" AK-47
I am looking to buy an AK-47(7.62X39) I looked at a Romanian AK-47 and really liked it, I have read that some have a welded muzzle nut & muzzlebrake and others do not. Does it matter? What should I look for? Thanks for any help,

Well IMHO, the only thing you need to look for is a chrome lined barrel and mag indents on either side of the reciever, above either side of the mag well..
If you can handle the gun, check the magazine fit. if the magazine has alot of slop in it, meaning it moves to either side and back and forth, you may want to look for a tighter gun..and if its hard to take the mazine out, ditto, you may want to look for another rifle.
warsaw pact magazines vary slightly from country to country, you could try another mag made buy a different country, or one of the type of mags you have the most of, to see if it fits better before you pass over a rifle.
make sure it has a side rail scope bracket if you want to use warsaw pact optics.
the slant brake is fine...and unless you plan to add another muzzle device, it being weilded on is good thing IMHO.0 -
Best AK47 out there right now, is being sold by www.k-var.com in the form of Russian Arsenal Saiga SGL rifles.
These are made in Russia with all the correct US parts.
They had a deal running on the 7.62x39 variant for around $550. I think they are starting go un in price.
The Romanian rifles are fine in that they have a Chrome lined barrel and are for the most part made in Romania. The finish on them is not pretty. The SAR 1 I bought towards the end of the AW Ban looked like someone had kicked it accross a gravel driveway.
The rifle shoots just fine though and I sent it off to Krebs Custom (back when they were still doing custom work) to be refinished and threaded for a muzzle brake.
If you go Romanian, get one that has the removable muzzle brake and bayonet lug.0 -

Before you buy a Romanian WASR 10/63, make sure the magazine fits properly. My magazine well is so tight some won't fit. My understanding is that these were designed for single stack 10 round magazines and then ground out after the sunset of the so called assault weapons ban to accept the double stackers. There are lots of grind marks inside of mine. The bluing is not uniform and sloppy. The engraving on the receiver is crude and appears to be done by hand by someone with the detox shakes. I paid $350 for it. I paid $490 for my Robinson Arms VEPR II and they are night and day different. The VEPRII is far superior. Check Atlantic Arms, the Lancaster AKs and so forth. 0 -
I like the Chinese best but if you plan on a side rail optic bulgarian and Russian are usually you nicest options. The yugoslavian aks are nice as well but typically are without scope rail just like the chinese. I like milled receivers but they all work. All mine have bean factory gun as opposed to kit guns and even the cheaper romanian or Egyptian should work dandy, watch the mag well on romanian wasr rifles as everyone else pointed out. 0 -

I have been very pleased with the Chinese Norinco's, Romanian SAR's, anything made by Arsenal and SAIGA. I have also had good luck with an Egyptian MAADI, and a Hungarian SA 85. It may be my favorite even though I did have to replace the trigger to correct terrible trigger slap. 0 -
I own two Norinco MAC 90's in 7.62x39 both are the milled versions. And while I will admit they are disposable weapons.I have killed deer with them at 200 yards with accuracy.Beyond that point they are just fun for plinking even with the Burris scopes being over kill for them.I have B-Square Bi-pods & scope mounts on them 0
