winchester model1902 22cal.

Anyone know anything about these rifles, it is a mini 22, looks like it was made as a kids first rifle.

It seems pretty old, but has no serial numbers.
Here is the info on the barrel
Manufactured by Winchester Repeating Arms Co.
New Haven Conn. Patented Aug. 29 1899
Mod. 1902 - 22 Short Long or Extra Long
Trade Mark Reg. U.S.Pat.Office & FGN.

It is a single shot bolt action, a knurled plunger at the back of the bolt sets the firing pin.

If anyone needs pic. I'll have to figure out how to get the darn things up - so bear with me.

    I just searched the Firearms for sale section and there are a few there.
    One write up says they were made from 1902 to 1931.
    Any way to narrow down the date?

    Hello crusty,

    Yes there is a way to narrow it down... the model designation stamp on the barrel tells me that it was manufactured prior to April of 1919. After that date, they were marked "MOD 02", and still later "MOD 02A". The "Extra Long" caliber further defines when it was made, but I can not remember the exact date off the top of my head. I will look it up later this evening and get back to you.

    Ok... Winchester added the 22 Extra Long chambering in January of 1914. That means that your rifle was made sometime between 1914 and April of 1919.

    You are quite welcome.

    Incidently, John M. Browning invented and patented the Model 1902, and it was one of his last patent designs for Winchester.
