    3100, (+ or -) That's from a 20" barrel. 2900 from a 16" barrel.

    Edit:

    laylandad,

We're pretty close, but this is one source I got my information from. Excerpt from an article in Infantry Magazine in 2004

    Velocity (ft/sec)--20.0" barrel Range (meters)
    Cartridge / Bullet 0 100 300 500 800 1000

    5.56x45mm 62gr 3100 2731 2076 1529 1032 895

    Edit II:

    bperdue21,

I just had an epiphany. If you don't have a 5.56mm NATO chamber (different from .223), you shouldn't try to duplicate that velocity. Work up until you see pressure signs.

Any idea what powder they use?

I believe the correct velocity in a 20" barrel should be somewhere around 3025 fps, with some data claiming 3000 fps +/- 40 fps. I don't have any info on the shorter barrels, but it would be a little slower.
