1873 Question
I have a 1873 Winchester I acquired several years ago. When you work the lever it does not cock the hammer. Is there a way to adjust this or is it simply worn too much. Thanks.

your hammer is actualy cocked by the toglles which moves the firing pin back and cocks the hammer. does the hammer move back and not stay back or not move at all. does the action go through a full cycle carrier come up and back down? some of these may help the real experts here know. best Kevin 0 -

It seems to cycle properly, just seems when the rod comes back it is a little too high to cock it. You can manually cock it and it will stay cocked until you pull the trigger. Just curious, don't know much about the internal mechanism or exactly how it works. Thanks. 0 -
does it want to be hard to close after you manully cock it and close it? and does the firing pin seem loose ?if so it a retractor in my exp. Kevin 0 -
No, it seems to close normally, I'll get out of the closet when I have some time and see if I can figure out if the firing pin is loose. Thanks for your help. 0 -
the firing pin in the ejection process depresses the hammer so the trigger will engage the full cock notch... if this doesn"t happen the firing pin or hole in frame is worn or somebody has filed of the top of the hammer..... this could also be caused by the trigger being to long 0 -
if the firing pin does not force the hammer down to engage the trigger in the full cock position you have three possible problems firing pin is worn allowing worn..... frame is worn firing pin hole..... trigger is to long and needs to be fitted 0
