Winchester Model 12 Question
Hi, experts. My question is this; what is the significance of a serial number on a Model 12 with the capitol letter W beneath the serial number? I've seen this on some but not all Model 12s. Thanks Jim

Did anybody ever make a pistol grip for a model 12 Winchester pump shotgun ? If so,are they still made and who sells them ?

That looks like the real deal, Maybe it was ordered as an extra barrel and never serialized, but that doesnt explain the lack of Winchester on the barrel. Or possibly its a lunch box barrel. One other thing I noticed was the font on the 12 is how the mod.1897 barrels were stamped not the mod 1912. The wavy lines on the rib are correct.

Disclaimer: I own a number of Model 12's, but I'm certainly no expert!
From the small slide handle and the checkering style it looks like an early trap, tournament, or pigeon grade assembly! I can't explain the missing Winchester marking, but there appears to be an oval with "vp" on the bottom rear of the barrel. It sure looks right, but shouldn't there be a serial number on the rear bottom of the assembly? I don't see one and none is mentioned. Also, there does not appear to be any patent stamps on the right side of the barrel.
I wonder if this is an extra barrel assembly that was ordered by a customer for an early model 12 after it left the factory. That might explain "no serial number", but it still doesn't explain the missing Winchester and patent stamps.
Added: It appears, from David Riffle's book, that the patent date marking was discontinued in late 1940.0 -

Winchester stopped making Nickel Steel barrels for the Model 12 in 1931.
I still do not know what to think of that barrel assembly, but I have my doubts that it is factory original.0 -
This is photo #29 from the current auction, notice the matting print on the rib. 
Here is a photo of my 1914 model 12 with a solid rib I took just minutes ago. In order to"fake" this wavy lined matting it would take a very very expensive machine. Not to mention all the other atributes including the wood.......If its not real its a great fake!!!0 -
It looks right to me, but the absence of the markings is certainly strange. I had an early tournament trap that would match up well with the wood and matting on the ones shown. 0
