Stevens 414 "Armory Rifle"

What makes the 414 an Armory rifle? Did it have a specific use? Also mine had a lower tang broken off. I had a gunsmith fix he silver soldered it. Was this the right thing to do or should it have been welded? If I send the reciever out to get re-case colored will it come apart? Any other place to look for a butt plate other than Numrich?

    They were target rifles starting in 1910. The US Olympic Team won in 1910 using this rifle. High School and College Rifle teams also used them. Silver solder was probably as good a way to fix it as any. Re case cloring may melt the silver solder. It is a casting and could be difficult to weld. If it could be welded it could probably be re case colored. Try the auction side and evil bay for a butplate. If you have the original reciever sight it is a definite plus. They were chambered in .22 Long Rifle and .22 Short.

    I do have the original sights. At least what I Think is original. They are in perfect condition. It has a fold down tang sight. There is a groove in the side for another sight. The gun overall is in real good shape. Except for the bottom tang. But, that is repaired. Bore is great! Can't wait to get it back so I can shoot it! He is going to make a main spring until I can find one.

    The fold down tang sight is either a factory option or an aftermarket sight. Gun should be just as accurate as with the original sight and will work fine. The slot in the side of the reciever is for the original factory reciever sight. They were made specificaly for this gun and were not used on any other model. I think you will enjoy it. I have one in .22 Long Rifle and one in .22 Short. Your gunsmith should easily be able to make the mainspring. They are fun to shoot and with a great bore I think you will shoot well with it.

    Thank you for the info. What does the buttplate look like? I bought this gun with a bunch of other ones. It has a globe front sight if that helps to determine what back sight itb should have. I am going to give it to my son when he gets older. He is just 7 now.

    I heard some of them had leaf springs and some had coil springs.

    I know the early ones had the flat mainspring. Not sure if they went to the coil spring on this particular model later on. I think the early ones had a plain metal butplate and the later ones had a hard ruber butplate. I may have this backwards. I am prety sure they are interchangable. The action is the same as all the other 44's and parts should interchange.
