40-82 Barrel

Is there anywhere out there to find a 40-82 barrel for a 1886? I know there are new after markets but I would like an original.

    The last "original" 40-82 W.C.F. barrels were made about 90-years ago... any that you are likely to find today were removed because they have something wrong with them. Good luck in your search.

    Exactly what are you trying to do/accomplish? I would GUESS some type of restoration project? Reason I ask is that some of us may have alternative suggections if you already have a barrel to work with.

    I too often look for old barrels or parts for a restoration. It has been my experience that eventually the barrel or part will show up, either here, another auction site, or at a gun show. Put this search on GB, then have GB notify you whenever anything matches your search phrase. The problem is, how long do you want to wait? If you are restoring and get tired of waiting (and the wait can be LONG for something like this...I have been waiting years for an 1880 dated trapdoor stock), anyway, you can put a modern repro barrel on, enjoy shooting the gun, and eventually when an original shows up you swap out the barrel. You can even get some of your money back by selling the repro barrel here once you find an original. just my 2 cents.

    About 30 years ago I removed one from and 86. It was very bad, gas blow and bent a little. I don't remember what happened to it. The rifle was rebarreled to 45-70. That is the only one I have seen in 50 yrs of working on rifles.

    With the 40 cal. you now have, there should be enough metal for re-boring to a 44 or 45 cal. cartridge.

    If you really want the 40-82, you might be able to re-line the existing barrel if it is heavy enough.

    Re-lining would work with maybe a 33 cal. also.

    I have a 1886 in 40-82 that was cut to 22" & half mag. I would like to put it back but it does not look good. The bore in this one is mint. I just do not want to put so much into that it will be the needless pit. Looks like an aftermarket barrel is the only choose for now or sell it as is. Thanks foor the comments.

    Believe it or not , I saw one for sale not long ago . So I'll spend the rest of the night wracking my feeble brain . If I can remember I'll post here .
