m97 trenchsweeper

i have a model m97 trench sweeper made by winchester in good working condition 12 gauge pump and still shoots great having recently fired it . the gun has cooler on barrel and clip for a bayonet > the date of 1918 is stamped on barrel an i checked serial number and it was indeed made in 1918.can anyone tell me what it is worth ?

    Hello Sir your question while valid is almost impossible to answer unless we have detailed in focus up close of all parts of your shotgun . sort of like your pictures are our eye from one foot away. The military shotguns are very collectible IF in original condition. See post above this one labeled STICKY how to post pictures.

    A series of clear close-up pictures are needed to properly evaluate your Winchester Model 1897. Be advised that the currently published serial versus DOM lists are not accurate. My bet is that your Trench Gun was not manufactured in the year 1918. With the serial number, I can determine when it was actually made (within a few months).

    I lose the bet... your Model 1897 is indeed a late-year 1918 production gun. You can send pictures to me at Win1885@msn.com if you like.

    harlanky...we are about at the end of this post and evidently we have established that you indeed have a 1918 M97 shotgun that could be a trench shotgun. Without photos it is hard to tell, but if it is the "real deal" and in good shape you could have a very collectible (read valuable) shotgun. You don't tell us how or where you got it nor do you give the history of the gun. Sadly, some folks have purchased cheap Chinese "knockoff" barrel shrouds ("cooler on the barrel") with the bayonet attachment ("clip for the bayonet") and put them on M97 and other riot shotguns and are calling the fakes "trench" shotguns. Does your shotgun, for example, have the "flaming bomb"/US on the receiver? That denotes US military acceptance. Go over it with glass to make sure. This is not a good market in which to sell any firearm but if yours is the real deal and is in 90% or better condition it could be worth as much as $4k + or -. Hope this helps. Good shooting!

    ok not sure what you mean by flaming bomb but gun has US stamped on reciever also ths number 35 is stamped on stock as i said before the serial is 691017 . i recieved gun from my uncle in 1967 i was told he got the gun from my great grandfather who had been in the army . i have pictures of him in uniform . also this gun is capable of slamfire which i did recently. as i understand it only the military model could do that?. i was going to give it to my son but his wife won't allow guns in the house and my grandson died in iraq ln june 08 so i have no one left to give it to so i am thinking of selling it and just want a fair price.i will be more than happy to send pictures but can't figure out how to download to this site but have sent via e mail to other people.

    All Winchester Model 1897s manufactured were capable of firing in what you refer to as "slamfire". Simply pull the trigger and hold it and operate the slide-action to fire the next shell.
