Winchester 1892 (Bert)

Happy New Year Bert here are the pics of my 1892 (finally [:)]:

There are 19 pictures total so it seemed wise to just link you to my photobucket account. I know the photo quality is not the best in the world, I'll work on getting a better camera this year, I hope the photos are good enough for you to give a reasonable assessment of the rifle. If you would prefer I post them all on here I have no problem with that either. Serial number is 156225, I believe you had previously said it was a 1900 DOM. I would greatly appreciate anything you can tell me about this old Winchester including approximate value and condition, including anything you see that specifically is wrong or hurts the rifle. I doubt I'll ever sell it as it was inherited from a good friend but I would like to know what I have. Some of the guys at the local club think it is probably an $800-900 rifle(which I thought was maybe high), I'm not sure any of them have your level of expertise though.

    What caliber is it?

    Serial number 156225 was made a few years later than 1900 (my guess is 1903).

    The overall condition is not the greatest (less than 10%), but it is 100% factory original. All of the important parts appear to be original, and more importantly, it has never been refinished.

    The caliber will have a large effect on the value. Additionally, what does the bore look like?

    Sorry about that Bert the caliber is 38-40. The bore looks fair to good, the rifle seems very shoot-able but I have not shot it (yet).

    Is it assumed to have not been refinished because it is "beat up"? Or are there other indicators that would point to it being unrestored?

    After looking at those pictures, your rifle looks to be all original. However, the most popular caliber was the 44-40, followed by the 38-40. The condition of the bore as you said appears to be ok, but not bright, and most likely a decent shooter. The fella's at the club are not far off with their evaluation.

    Yes, there are lots of indicators... the easiest to identify are the striations in the steel (on the sides of the receiver frame). Being a 38 W.C.F. with a fair (shootable) bore, it is worth in the $900 - $1000 range.

    Thanks Bert, I assumed the striations in the receiver were just something that happened to the rifle over the course of its service life. Thanks a bunch, your insight is greatly appreciated.
