.308 AR which to choose

Ive been thinking about a .308 as my next rifle and the more i look into in im really likeing a .308 in a AR style rifle, however whats the pros and cons on todays AR rifles, bushmaster, armalite, DPMS? Im new to any AR style rifle.

    You can get a DPMS AP4 LR-30 or Armalite AR-10SPR for arounda 900-1000. Both are good, I'd get the new style Armalite or a DPMS with a ejection port cover/forward assist/brass deflecter upper if it was my choice to make..

    they'll cost you a few more dollars depending on where you buy from, but the ejection port cover and brass deflecter are good things to have IMHO.

    Id like to stay under 1000-1300, however just kind of gathering some informaiton at this time. At first i was thinking of a .223 but i like the ability to reach out there with the .308.

    Reaching out with the force to shoot through stuff usually means you sacrifice portability for barrel length and weight.

    The Armalite AR-10SPR would be the ticket. It weights about 10.5-11 pounds loaded with an aimpoint and BUIS and its about 40" long. Mags are on the expensive side for the armalite compared to the DPMS after market magazines though.

    the Lr-30 with 24" heavy barrel is every new guys dream, and it is wgreat shooter, But its sure not any fun to pack around, the thing weight over 15 pounds when decked out with a good scope, stock and bipod.

    The DPMS LR-30T looks good because of its low cost and heavy 18" barrel, but the gas system is far to short, even for an AR-15 of the same configuration.


    Now the DMPS Lr-30L hunting rifle, SASS, and the new SPR are good options. IMHO. and if you watch the auction side closely you might find a deal on seperate upper and lower recivers to shave off several houndred dollars retail. Beware parts uppers though, no telling what monkey put em together.

    If you see an upper/lower your intersted in, just post over on the general and someone will tell you if the price is right and whatnot.

    Noveske still uses Armalite AR-10 recievers..

    also high quality 20 round LR-30 mags are 16.00 from C-products. I hope they make a 30 round version in the not to distant future, these guys are looking forward.. and I'd like to have a bunch of em..

    I like the Armalite's only 2 draw backs. 1) Armalite's uses only their uppers and I believe Noveske. DPMS can use almost any other upper ( more options ) how ever I wouldn't call that, that much of a problem.
    The other is their magazines are more expensive than the DPMS or other brands but I myself don't consider that a problem but some people would.
    Their magazine tend to run about $40 and up for new ones. With a little time spent you can find a better deal or buy used. DPMS will run around $30 a mag, but Magpul is now offering a DPMS mag for less money. IMHO I still prefer the Armalites over ever one else. There may be some better ones out there but they will cost you twice as much money. In the $1000-$1300 range the Armalite can't be beat.

    FN-FAL - I couldn't resist either.

    However, I'd look at the Rock River Arms AR-10 - it takes (relatively) cheap and plentiful FAL mags.

    DPMS, hands down. You can even get the Remington version as the R-25. Make sure you get the one with the dust cover, and remember that these will take most any AR aftermarket trigger. I found the Bushmaster two stage was to my liking.

    i wanted an AR10 but wound up with a cetme 308, so far it has been super, good groups with fact and reloads, mags are cheep.

    heave SOB but i like it.

    I use the DPMS pattern.

    My most recent acquisition is a limited run Rguns has.

    It has a 16" chromelined barrel, free float 4 rail HG, SASS gas block, LMT SOPMOD stock and a JP trigger.

    It is short and light and I have been shooting steel plates at 800 meters.
    I LIKE it!

    I have a POF lower with the DPMS flat top upper. The POF has an integral trigger guard and an ambi bolt release. The DPMS upper fit tight and uses fairly inexpensive DPMS style magazines, CProducts makes a good version. I would say the only down side is having to use a sleeve over the hinge pin but once it's slipped into the upper it's set.
