Side folding stocks on AR's Part ll
Notpars: If you want a side folding stock AR do your self a favor and if you want one in 5.56/.223 get yourself an AR180. Side folding stock, gas piston, very reliable and for a $1000 or so you can buy one right here on GB. Do a search here there are always a few for sale. Hopefully Mark Christian will see this and put his 5 cents in. His 5 cents is worth more than every one else's 2 cents.

I owned a Costa Mesa 180 for many years, the mickey mouse stock hinge was definitely the weak point of the design. It's a design that dates to the mid 60's, unless you can steal one on a BIL kind of deal there is a lot of way better designed rifles out their now. If you want something light that stash under your coat, the KelTec seems like the best deal to me, ( price, size and folding stock wise). 0 -

Went on GB and did a search on the Kel-Tec. I just don't seem to care for that design at all.
Doesn't look like you could use it with the stock folded either. What kind of mags does it use0 -
The best sidefolder I've seen was on one of the the Norinco AK models.
It locks up like it's welded and has a cleaning kit in the plastic handgrip.
The handgrip contacts your face in the firing position, keeping cold steel off the cheek.
One was shown in a Mideast photo recently.
They are rare now.0 -

The ZM system is a sound one. not sure if Para ordnance has tweaked the design for mass perduction tho.

By design this takes ordinary AR-15 mags, and the rifle will store an extra 30 rounder in the buttstock (which is nice).
No, you can't use it with the stock folded, BUT there is actually a hidden advantage here.
Because the gun can't fire when folded, the ATF has determined that this gun falls into the same category as take-down rifles, and minimum length rules don't apply when the gun is folded.
In other words, this design lets you have a gun that when folded is a good bit shorter in overall length than virtually all the folding stock guns, but still be legal, and without special paperwork. Again, if you want a concealable rifle, this is pretty nice.
Unless you really need to be able to fire the gun from within closed spaces (eg from within a car), I don't think you're giving much up by not being able to fire the gun unfolded here. In most cases, its difficult to do that accurately anyway, and you can unfold the gun and be ready to fire in a matter of 1-2 seconds.0 -

It is the same receiver and action as the PLR-16, and they both take AR Mags, and no, you cannot use it with the stock folded.
They are lightweight, and my PLR-16 has been 100% reliable even with BETA-C 100 round drums. I do not see them, however, as a platform that would hold up to sustained firing.0 -

Well federal law measures from "extreme" ends meaning that they measure from the open position on all guns. So even unless the gun is under 26" OAL when at its longest point it is legal.
Some states measure from the smallest size so in those places your example may be true.0 -
I am impressed. I thought I might get a response or two but not this many and all very good too. I am copying this and going to check out all these rifles as we speak. The other choice was fitting a Butler Creek side folder to a mini-14 but then I am away from the AR15 format and its cheap magazines. Again, thanks for all the great responses. I had this idea of buying an AR and attaching a folding stock like the Para Ordnance and you all have straightened me out about that. Oh well, it was a thought. 0
