AK-47 HIGH CAP ADAPTATION LEGAL?

I HAVE A WASR-10/ AK-47 SEMI AUTO MADE DURING "THE BAN" SO THE MAGAZINE WELL ONLY HOLDS A SINGLE STACK 10 ROUND MAGAZINE. I'M TOLD THAT YOU CAN HONE OUT THE RECEIVER SO IT WILL HOLD DOUBLE STACK, 30 ROUNDS MAGAZINES AND THE GUN WILL FUNCTION FINE. I AM UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT THIS IS NOT LEGAL, HOWEVER A FRIEND OF MINE SUGGESTED THAT SINCE "THE BAN" WAS OVER, I COULD GET AWAY WITH THIS. ANYBODY KNOW???

    Depending on what state you are in yes it is legal on a fed level.

    You need to make sure you are 922(r) compliant though - this means you'll need to replace "evil foreign made parts" with "good domestic made parts". There is a list of parts that are "evil" and you can't have more than 10 of them in a complete rifle.

    Well too bad your friend does not know the ban is NOT over. The 1994 AWB that dealt with DOMESTIC (US made) firearms ended in 2004. The 1989 Import ban (imported firearms) is still fully in effect.

    There are also several other "bans" that are not over, 1986 ban (FOAP) on manufacture new machine guns for public use, the 1968 gun laws, 1934 laws and all the other small ones in between.

    These are at the federal level, dont forget about state laws.

    You neglected to mention that critical bit of information.

    As mentioned, yes, you can take a 10 round AK and grind out the magazine well to accept high cap mags, and if you do a good enough job, the mag won't "wobble" much and you'll have a functional high cap gun.

    To get the gun to be FEDERALLY legal, you'd need to add a number of American made parts to ensure 922r compliance. That topic is covered in detail elsewhere. In practice, enforcement of this particular bit of Federal gun law is spotty. Since the law in question concerns BUILDING the gun (not possessing it), and it can be difficult to prove in a court of law who built a particular gun, usually the Feds just confiscate any non-compliant guns they encounter.

    In terms of MA-STATE legal, you are not allowed to IMPORT guns in post-ban configuration into the State. But I have to admit, I'm not 100% sure about the exact status in MA with respect to CONVERSION of an existing low cap gun into a high cap.

    I do know for sure that you can legally purchase "post-ban" type AR-15 rifles in MA.

    So I am GUESSING that if your final AK build is in a "post ban" form that is otherwise MA compliant (ie no flash hider, bayonet lug, etc) then it might be OK for you to modify your gun.

    But given the sometimes arbitrary and capricious nature of gun law enforcement in MA, I wouldn't try this without some better confirmation.

    You might contact GOAL (the MA State gun group) and ask them. If you aren't a member. . .join immediately . . .they need you, and you need them

    In any case I don't think you will be able to legally bring in high cap magazines for the gun.

    Check the trigger, hammer, and disconnector for a "C" on the sides of them. The "C" stands for Century International and means that they are US made parts.

    The pistol grip should is most likely also made in the US. Look for a "C" on the pistol grip as well. I forget though if they marked their US made pistol grips.

    Century and many other AK manufacturers (Arsenal for example) never marked their US made gas pistons.

    A high capacity Wasr-10 or Sar1 has those parts as US parts to keep them legal according to 922r.

    If the rifle has a removable slant muzzle brake, that needs to be US made as well.

    If yours aren't marked with a "C" I would recommend you change them out with Tapco parts. Tapco makes a great fire control group for the Wasr rifles called the G2. You will want the single hook version.

    I have read on-line of other owners hoggin out the magwell on single stack wasr's to accept high capacity magazines. If you go that route I would recommend you take your time. It's real easy to cut out too much of the mag well.
