is there a "trick" to reassembling a 1911?

I can't get my Firestorm 1911 clone back together. The spring keeps pushing the ring that the slide stop goes through all the way back before I can get it aligned with the hole.

    Leave the recoil spring plug out and the barrel bushing turned.
    That will keep the spring pressure from pushing the barrel link back.
    Yhen put the plug in and turn the bushing back down.

    Recoil spring compression, and the locking of the bushing in place has been taught to us as the very final part of assembly. Reverse, of course, for dis-assembly. Best, Joe

    Motivation will really help . one of the first times I ever had one completely apart down to the last piece I was in VIETNAM had dropped mine in the mud[:0]was dark and in tent with all parts on my bunk with lights on we got Mortar attack so all lights were cut off I assmbled it in the dark in about 2 minutes. LOL[:I]

    The spring and plug are the last to go in. Watch out you dont idiot scratch the frame with the slide stop

    *sigh* that happened with a Llama I used to own.

    Since the first step is removing the slide stop, I thought that would be the last step in reassembly.

    I always assemble the slide/barrel/spring and plug before putting it on the frame. Even w/o a full length guide rod.

    Usually, the link will line up but if not... pull the slide a little forward so the slide stop hole is clear, put the slide stop pin into the frame, push the slide back till it stops against the slide stop. This will push the link into proper position... pull the slide stop out, push the slide onto the frame... put the slide stop in through the frame and barrel link.

    I assemble the slide assembly first and that way, usually don't need a bushing wrench. It is tricky and takes a little talent. You have to compress the recoil spring while guiding it with the other hand and once it's in... you have to cradle the bottom of the slide in your fingers as you put it on the frame.

    You've probably already figured it out.

    You will find it much easier if you remove the plug and relieve the pressure of the spring first, and install the plug and place the tension on the spring last.
