AR in 6.8
I have convinced myself i need an AR in 6.8 caliber. Mostly deer/hog hunting, some yotes. Am I barking up the right tree? Can someone give me firsthand knowledge? Thanks.

Yes absolutely your barking up the right tree. I have two of them and they are my favorite rifles. Ammo can be a little difficult to find at times and brass isn't cheap but its well worth the pain some times. This was my latest build. The second photo was the first one I built more than 3 years ago. Much more punch then the 5.56/.223.

I have had an upper barreled in 6.8 for about a year now, I killed deer with it last year, It did a good job. but in my experiance 5.56 does too. with my light weight upper recoil is abit more then 5.56..
The tapper in the case is supposed to improve extraction, but I never really noticed much of a problem with the 5.56 in that department. reliability has been good with it, I dont think I've had a failure to feed or fire yet, butI've probably shot less then 2000 round through it, and its always been cleaned.
accuracy is good, but I dont think it will ever make a long range match shooters round, but niether was its parent round and that isnt what it was designed for anywho.

the CTR stock is a good upgrade to get. I know the side to side wobble of regular stocks can be agravating and tends to cause me to pull the rifleinto my shulder and in my opinion that isnt conductive to good accuracy..
The CTR, like any other regular AR collapsible makes for two check welds, the only correction for that is the magpul M-93B or UBR stock, if you anal..
Either stock, You can'(T) go wrong IMHO.

I've been hunting around for a second 'more powerful' upper for my AR as of late as well. And, I've looked into the 6.8. First thing I've found is you want a long barrel for it. Short barrels just don't give an already slow round much of enough jump. The same can be said of the 6.5 Grendel. In comparing the two I chose the Grendel simply for the fact it can shoot a high BC bullet. The 6.8 can't. There isn't length enough in the magazine. Other than that the two will push out equal weight bullets at the same speeds. Just that the Grendel can put longer higher BC bullets in the case.
Moving up in power, you could look at the 6mm BR. I have a friend here in MN I shoot with sometimes that has one. Ballistically it's what he wants. The 6mm is right up with the 6.5 in BC and the case has more capacity, therefore punch.
Moving up in power again, Olympic Arms makes upper and rifles in all three WSSM's. Those are about as powerful as full length rounds.
All of the ones I mentioned above you can buy ammo/brass for. You don't need to reload or even form brass to get what you want.
An option in this direction is the 6mm AR/Turbo. The straight AR is the Grendel (improved 6PPC) case necked down to 6MM and the Turbo version is improved from that. You have to form and reload for those. Same if you went with any 'one-off' caliber like 6.5BR. 7Br is out there but not on a regular basis.
Bottom line: 6.8 is a decent upgrade to the AR chassis. However, you aren't going to get long range bullets into it. Even if you did, like the 6.5G, it's just not competitive side by side with bigger cases. The 6 BR is competitive and you don't have to load for it.0 -
Love my 6.8 SPC, worth the conversion. I acutally built the whole gun doing it in two halves till it was assembled and standing on its own. Glad I did. It has some good poop out past 100 Mtrs.. 0 -

They will custom build your rifle in the sense that they let you pick the options. I went with a heavy barrel that is 18" with standard handguards, A3 handle/sights, and collapsible stock. Armalite1015's rifle is about the finest I have ever seen. Mine is plain Jane in comparison and I want to go to his style stock. Ammo isn't cheap but available. 0 -
I'm doing a build and have been leaning toward the .458 Socom myself as where I live, ranges are usually withing 200 yds and I personally am a big fan of 45 calibers. 0 -

Thank You very much, This is a CMMG upper that I replaced the hand guards with the free floats from Midwest Industries along with the front sight gas block. The sights are Magpuls. The scope is the Burris AR322. The CMMG barrel is what I'd consider heavy.
The lower is also CMMG but put my parts in it. The stock and pistol grip are Magpul. The lower gets the same treatment all my other AR's get. Extended bolt release, winter trigger guard, extended charging handle latch and ambidextrous safety. The mag in the picture is a PRI.
This was one of the rifles that I was going to put the piston kit on but then changed my mind.0 -
