300 Ultra Mag or 300 WSM

Although a Ruger tang safety fan I have decided on purchasing a new rifle with the intent of using it for elk, mule deer, white tail. I have narrowed my search down to the Model 700 XHR 300 Ultra Mag and the Model 7 300 WSM
Which is the best caliber of the two and why ? .... Thanks

    Both will do the job? At what range will determine, when you need the UMP of the RUM.

    A good friend shoots at the range with a guy who was into the ultra mags heavy, he switched into the WSM's but didn't stay long and quickly returned back to the ultra mags.
    I know it has alot to do with personal preference, @ 300 + yrds what is the better gun ?

    Hello Cotton---First of all, I don't believe Rem. chambers the WSM in the mod. 7. I think it is the RSAUM, which is a slightly "lesser" cartridge. I also recall that the Mod. 7 has a 22" Bbl as opposed to a 26" for the Ultra Mag, hence lower velocity, and energy. I like the mod. 7 if I'm going to carry it on long trecks. On the other hand, where I hunt (Oregon), there are so many jerks in the woods, that I want an "instant kill", on Elk. If a wounded elk goes over the hill in Oregon, even if less than 100 yds., you will likely hear the killing shot from someone you don't know, who has now claimed your elk. I realize that nothing is guaranteed when hunting, but I like the better odds of the Ultra-Mag. for elk. Lastly, if you are up to it, the ultra mag has the edge on effective distance. Bottom line is probably personal choice. HAWKSHAW

    My brother just bought a Rem 300 Ultra mag for elk...he got his elk and he loves the round.

    Agree with Hawkshaw that it is a matter of personal choice. I have a Sako 75 in 300 RUM and really like the cartridge. . .and handloading for it. It has a muzzlebrake and recoil is comparable to a 308. A friend has a Rem 700 in 300 WSM and swears by it. We've used both side by side at the range and both have had good results on game. In either caliber I'd go with a 26 inch barrel to get the most out of the potential of both cartridges. The WSM will get you a little shorter total package, and the 26 inch RUM with brake is long, but I'll stick with the 300 RUM when I want a long range solution.

    Thanks for your help, I'm favoring the rifle in the link below and thinking of a monarch mounted on top .. Any thoughts on the triangular barrel ? it is available with 26" barrel and after ya'lls recomendations that is what I'll go with.

    Yes, Remington does in fact make the Model 7 in 300 WSM.

    If it were myself, I would think about what type of hunting I was to do...spot and stalk, still hunt, ambush from a watch?

    If you are going to carry the rifle over long distance, you might consider the model 7. However, the 700 in 300 RUM will get the job done, if you can handle the recoil. If you can't handle the recoil, and develop a flinch, no amount of horsepower will make up for a poorly placed shot. The 300 WSM will kill just as dead with less recoil, but with a little more drop, where range determination...not estimation is at a premium.

    If you must have a magnum, you might consider the 7mm Rem Mag, 7mm WSM, and the regular 300 win Mag. They are tried and true, with less recoil than the big RUM.

    The triangular barrel is a marketing ploy.
    If you want it get it but realize it was designed to sell rifles.
    It is not more accurate, and due to uneven heating it walks when used rapidfire.
    But you won't be using it rpaidfire.

    I prefer the 7mm WSM.

    I'm a stocky fella with broad shoulders and short armed that is why the model 7 was an eye catcher. Actually most youth models fit me better than an adult rifle.
    I bought my son a rossi to hunt with this year and I love the fit, I shoot with both eyes open and everytime I throw it to my shoulder it is a perfect fit.
    Still looking/considering what to get .... maybe a used 300 win M77 tang safety, did the 7mm STW catch on ? it doesn't seem as popular these days, I even considered building one when they were a wildcat.

    The longer Ultra will out-perform almost any other 300 Mag Caliber. Frankly however, I would not buy either. I have been hunting with a 300 Win. Mag Model 700 since 1971. It's done a fine job on almost everything. Mine has a 24" barrel and the barrel (older one) is stainless. You can buy the ammo TODAY for much less than the two you are considering. I am older now...67 and instead of lugging these "heavies" around...I am shooting a Rem 700 Mountain Rifle in 260...and it has not let me down yet!
