22 ammo duds
Is it just me or my guns? I am having a lot more failure to fire on some of this new 22 ammo. Dosen't seem to matter what brand. Anybody else having this problem?

Usually happens with the bulk pack Remington "Golden Bullets", sometimes the bulk pack federals also. I've found it has a lot to do with how hard the firing pin hit the rim, igniting the primer. Some pistols are way better with the cheap ammo, that has insensitive primers.

Ditto for misfires on the bulk pack Remingtons. I've also had a pretty high number of misfires on the Remington target rounds, though I haven't shot any of either type in a while.
If you are getting misfires, the first thing to do is eject the dud round and check to see if it has a nice good firing pin dent in the rim.
A shallow dent indicates a weak firing pin strike and almost certainly implicates the gun and not the ammo. Dirt in the chamber, firing pin channel, or worn out springs can all contribute to light primer strikes.
Another test is to take the dud round and put in in a different gun and see if that works. Because of different spring tension or firing pin geometry, some guns are just better at setting off rounds than others.
In my experience, probably about half of the time I get a dud, it won't go off in ANY gun. . ie its just a bad round.
Last thing, you can try different types of ammo and see if its ammo specific. As mentioned, some types of ammo will have some bad rounds in there. Some types may have harder primers. As a general rule, serious "match" type ammo has good quality control, shouldn't contain any defective rounds, and should, therefore, make good ammo to test with.0 -
Oh definitely getting lots of duds in the last 6 to 12 months. Seems like more than I've ever had before. I'm getting it with Remington and Federal in their "Value Packs". Also, noticed lots of duds just laying on the ground at my local range. They all have a strong firing pin hit. Guess I'm not being picked on, it's everywhere. 0 -
I only run the Federal 550 bulk in my Ruger pistols and have no complaints. Stopped using Remington in them due to excessive feed and ftf problems. 0 -

It has been know for years that Remington has a high number of DUDS in their target ammo. Now it seems to be all there rimfire ammo. It seems they have forgotten how to prime the cases . Two major problems #1 when they spin the primer compound in the case the mix is to stiff and it leaves voids "not primed in all 360 degrees of the rim" and #2 the priming mix is too brittle "cracks and breaks away from the rim" if the ammo sees any kind of rough handling. You can see what caused your dud by removing the bullet from the case "you can do this by your fingers" and then examine the powder if you see green flakes intermixed with the gray powder this is the priming compound broken out of the rim during shipping and if this is not the problem take a light and look at the inside of case at priming compound it should go 360 degrees around the rim. yupp, similar experience, so i tried an experiment, i rechambered the round, several times with 5 firing pin strikes, no go bang, then i put it in my old trusty Stevens Favorite, over 100 years old !! and it go BANG ! that old rifle has the hardest firing pin strike of any .22LR rifle i currently own, so i am guessing the old timers had similar problems, so the rifle Mfgrs. made the hammer spring a lot harder than we have today, except maybe the new single shot rifles we own, does anyone who has this problem tried that ammo in a single shot rifle ? 0 -
For duds on bulk packs remington is king of the pack. I only buy remington if there is nothing else is available. Federal bulk packs almost never have have issues for me. 0 -
I used to have very good luck with the Remington Golden bullet bulk packs until they redesigned the box a couple of years ago. It seem they started slacking off on the quality at that time. I used to be able to shoot a brick and have maybe one or two duds, now with this new stuff it seems I get a dud every 50-100 rounds. And to add insult to injury they keep raising the price on the inferior ammo. 0 -
I had some duds in Federal 325 Walmart packs. Notified the company and they took care of the problem.
Three years ago I used some Golden Rem 22s, many were missfires and duds. They don't meet the specs for a Ruger Target pistol according to Ruger.0 -
If you listen to federals bulk pack they go pop, snap and sound like cereal. I was outside shooting with my grandson on a quiet evening and I couldn't believe the sounds. I thought some may not make it out the barrel I try not to buy the Rems as they are worse in my opinion.[xx(][?] 0
