38 Revolver ID (2 pics)

Any idea of the maker of this 38cal 2 inch revolver, not one marking on it and looks like a Colt Detective. Ser.#45317[img][/img]DSC08369-1.jpg[img][/img][img][/img]DSC08366.jpg

    No marks????? Wonder if that could be a "air crew men" issued by the
    US air force to pilots, then "cleaned" up so it went home with the owner??? bob

    Dont think so, that had an aluminum frame, wooden grips. I was thinking may be a Spanish knockoff but its to well manufactured and would be stamped "Spain" somewhere. Does have Colt logoed plastic grips but they could have been added. I have a 38 Colt Police Positive Detective and it is smaller framed than this gun.

    may be right about the Spain thing. I have a fairly complete pictures
    of many of the copied pistols from there. Bob

    Your posting does not make sense to me.

    First, you say "not one marking", then you say "detective ser #45317". Which is it? Does it have markings, or not?

    We need to see larger photos, close enough to read the markings (or where we would expect to see markings). And, we need to see the bottom of the grip frame & the part of the frame not visible when the cylinder is closed.

    General appearance, serial number, and the plastic "horsie" Colt grips agree with the WW II Colt Commando. But the lack of markings is not right, these guns were properly marked by Colt and most had military inspectors' marks.

    It looks "too Colt" to be a Spanish copy, I suspect it to be a Colt that has been "sanitized" by removal of all markings except the serial number.

    But what would be the point to remove all markings? Then leave the serial #. To do all that work and then reblue just dont make sense.

    japanese manufacturers have also copied colt revolvers in the past. try taking the grips off and look for any other markings

    The pistol appears to be reblued. Polishing could have removed the rampant colt on the side of the frame or sideplate. Barrel could have been shortened with the markings going with the removed part of the barrel.
