270 WSM for Coyotes

    Colonel Plink,

The Hornady V-MAX in that weight will probably be your best bet. I know for a fact that it will open up on coyotes in the WSM... If you save hides, I'd skip it.

The .270 WSM, like any of the cartridges in this capacity range, will use a lot of powder and create recoil that is not necessary for coyote. Most barrels are not long enough to use all of the powder which will be recommended for the case/bullet combination. However, I suspect that you might be looking for a multi-use cartridge instead of a dedicated varmint rifle cartridge. Volume shooting with the .270 WSM is not recommended but I generally don't get more than a couple of shots when hunting coyotes.

Any of the '4350-type' powders will be a good start for loads.

    Best.

Thanks for the wealth of information. Pelts aren't the consideration, just predator control. Using this particular rifle is just stop-gap unitl I can afford another varmint gun.

As always, I appreciate you sharing your experience and input.
