1928 Model 12 Winchester Help!

I have a 1928 Winchester Model 12, 20 gauge that belonged to my wife's mother and grandfather before her. It's been used as a hunting arm in their family for...well no one knows for sure, but more than 70 years.

Here's the problem. The firing pin, I think, broke several years ago. They took it to a local gun smith who died before fixing the gun. A couple years later, my wife's father passed away. Soon after, my mother in law handed my wife the the gun and a bag of parts and said here. It's yours now. I know he can fix it. The he being me! ;~)

I thought cool, I'm an accomplished knife maker and redneck engineer, I'll make any broken parts and fix it up for the wife to use. Unfortunately the only part not in the bag is the firing pin. No example to make a new one from.

My problem is that now I have to buy a replacement. I don't know what parts will interchange between years and gauges. I've found firing pins on gunbroker that say 12 gauge, but look just like what I have a exploded view drawing of for the 20 gauge. Then there is one that says doesn't know what gauge, but it's 2 3/4" long. But I don't know the length of the original 1928 20 gauge pin.

There is also one listing that says 16, 20 and 28 gauge pin, but I don't know if all the years were the same.

Any guidance you guys can give would be greatly appreciated.

    That shouldn't be a difficult part to find, and as Mike Whiskey said, the 16, 20, and 28 gauge guns all take the same firing pin. I also don't think the year of manufacturing of the gun will be an issue. Good Luck.

    So there are 2 sizes of frames, 12 gauge and small frame. And the year shouldn't matter. That helps a lot.

    And you may be right Winchester, I've found a couple on GB auction site that should fit from what you guys say, but I didn't want to order something only to find out that it worked with a 1932 and newer but not my 1928. Which would be just about my luck. LOL

    There are also parts distributers like Numrich, Nuline Guns, and also some people on this forum that stock N.O.S. parts for Winchesters. Let us know how it turns out.

    Speaking of "gun envy", I've always wanted a nice Model 12 in 20 or 28 guage. Send us some pictures when it's all back together!

    Will do Rob. I thought about restoring the gun, but it's always been a farm gun. Had a pretty hard and useful life.

    It's not really what you might call a collectors dream. So it wouldn't ruin the value to restore it I don't think. But I think I'm probably just going to clean it up and keep the character. ;~)

    But I will be glad to show it off when I'm done.
