winchester model 12 15ga chamber size

Hello can someone tell me about what year the 16 ga changed the chamber size to 2 3/4" when was the 2 9/16" stopped being produced?

    I think it was 1926 when Winchester made 2 3/4 the standard chamber length for the 20 gauge from 2 1/2 and 16 gauge from 2 9/16.

    The gun was made in 1917 by the serial #

    A gun factory chambered for 2 3/4 would have it marked on the barrel. However, if your gun was 2 9/16 when it left the factory and lengthened at a later time by an independant gunsmith, it may or may not have been marked. The only way to know for sure would be to measure the chamber. Also, measure the ejection port as well.

    If your gun is a 1917 vintage, it will be marked "MODEL 1912". All "Model 1912" marked guns and all of the early production Model 12s in 16-gauge were chambered for a 2-9/16" shell, and the chamber length was not marked anywhere on the gun. In 1926, Winchester changed the chamber length to 2-3/4" and at the same time, they began stamping the chamber length on the gun (on the bottom of the receiver just above the loading port, or on the barrel).
