Need bolt for Savage Model 3. Have access to bolt for Savage 3D. Can the 3D bolt be used in the Model 3? Any ideas? Thanks.

Oh boy, now the fun begins for you. I had an extra Model 3 bolt until about 6 months ago when I sold it.
I had a purchased an "no model" Springfield single shot .22 several years ago in non working condition. All it needed was a mainspring for the bolt.
It took me awhile to figure out exactly what model it was. Then I discovered that bolt parts for the early model 3 were nearly impossible to find. After 2+ years searching, and several moderately successful attempts to fab a spring ( diameter, correct length etc. I could find no specs.), I finally found a complete one here on GB. Mis-ID'd as a Mossberg bolt. I then used the spring from the complete bolt to fab one for the incomplete bolt.
Anyway, I suspect you're in for a long search. I never had any luck from any parts vendors, and i contacted a bunch of them. You'll likely have to watch the auctions and gunshow vendors.
Be diligent and patient. Check seveal times a week. And think "out of the box" in your searches. Alot of these old bolts are listed by people who don't know what make/model they are. They may be mis-ID'd, or listed as "Unknown make". But DON"T give up. I've had several gn projects were parts as hard or harder to find. And I ALWAYS find them eventually. hey are out there. You just have to hang in there until you find them.
A bolt from any of the later Model 3's ( B,C, etc) will not work. Nor will a bolt from any other Savage/Stevens model. But, these rifles were made under several different brand names. Springfield is the most common. Usually the odd-balls have no model number. So familurize yourself with what the bolt LOOKS like. So you can ID one on sight. If you need, I can you pics.
    Good luck.

Yes! I think you can use the 3D bolt. I have a 3C and the D is the options the rifle comes with. The rifle I have is a C and it has a Layman Front sight and peep rear sight and longer heavier barrel. Your rifle is I will bet the standard model 3. I notice on the rifle I have the bolt handle is bent down to clear a scope and there is a notch cut in the stock, if you have the notch cut in your stock and the D handle is bent the bolt should work.

I think you're wrong. The early model 3 was a very basic and simple bolt design. And while the basic receiver was the basis for several later Savage/Stevens models, the principle differences were in improved bolt design. To include safety's and self (vs.Manual) cocking signs which include differences in how the trigger engages the bolt.

If you go over to Numrich and look at Savage 3 you will see they only have one bolt listed for the Model 3. If you go down through the list of parts there are parts that interchange with all of the 4 rifles. According to the way they have the bolt listed for the 3 it is the same as the 3C, 3D, 3A. Try the first link he has a lot of bolt action parts for the Savage and the second link you can ask some questions, too bad the Savage fourm is gone.

I still think you are mistaken. BTW: I'm the one who got the Vintage Savage/Stevens sticky started at RFC. Quite a disappointment IMO. I was trying for a forum of it's own.

No it is Numrich you are saying is mistaken a third party pice of imformation along with the prior statement I made. Now that you have gone this far you have given you comments with out nonthing to back them up. I have a old model of the Model 3C and I have put a 3 bolt in it and it functioned.
This is doing nothing to help 318lj solve his bolt problem, if you have the bolt and can try the bolt in the rifle would be the best way to find out if it will fit and function. If you don't want to fit the bolt take it to a gun smith and have him take a look at it. These are really nice rifles, the 3C I have will put every round I shoot at seventy five feet in a two in bull, if you can get your rifle running you will like it.

You are misinterpeting the Numrich Website. Note that the listing for a Model 3 bolt does not say it will fit the A,B,C etc. It does have a seperate listing on that page for a 3A bolt.
Then go back to the Models list. Scroll down and you'll find seperate listings for the 3 A,B,C.D etc. Note that the lists for the bolts for these do not include the plain model 3. But correspond w/the Stevens model 83 and 53.
And even at that, it's not certain that Numrich is always correct. On these old hard to find parts for models, they will often sell you parts they deem "close enough" inb that it can "possibly" be modified to work.
Case in point. Numrich lists the same extractor for the Stevens model 83 and 53. But they are not the same. They will sell you a 53 extractor that is held in by a pin. But the one for the 83 is held in by pressure from the plunger, and won't work unless modified. And then doesn't work well.
I am helping if I keep origial poster from wasting time/money on wrong parts.
