Model 54 scope mounts

Hello guys,
I inherited a model 54 winchester .270 and am thinking I will use it for hunting. It currently has a zeiss zeilklein scope on it with a griffin and howe side mount. I am going to pull this stuff off and sell it and mount a modern scope on it. What is the best way to go about this and do you recommend any certain mounts? Thanks alot for the help it is much appreciated. Neil

    Optics have come a long way since your old Zeiss scope was made, though it was a quality optic in its day. The Griffin & Howe side mount is an excellent mount, with slick quick-detach feature, with good return-to-zero indexing. A little on the heavy and bulky side perhaps, but finely made. Those mounts are still available today at very premium pricing. Maybe a more modern quality scope in the existing G&H mounts? Instead of drilling and tapping the receiver of the Model 54 for modern mounts, and having to patch up the wood, etc. where the side mount was removed?

    Removing a G&H sidemount leaves 2 big holes in the side of the reciever and that is a great mount. Just change the scope out if you must. That setup is top notch even on todays standards. If it were me, I would leave the whole thing alone and buy another gun and scope.

    Suggest that you sell the rifle to someone who understands what you have and buy something more modern. If the G&H mount is a double lever you can buy one with 1" rings and mount a newer scope. The bolt may not clear a new scope so you will have to bend the bolt and then cut out the stock for the bent bolt. If you remove the mount there are FIVE holes in the side of the rifle three screws and two pins. I have more then one rifle with a zeiss zeilklein on it and I would not think of changing anything.

    Well thanks alot for the replies. I have decided to shoot it like it is. My grandfather has shot many deer,elk, and even a nice mountain goat in california with this set up and I thought it would be cool to use it as an everyday rifle with a new scope. I took it bear hunting last fall but failed to get a shot at a bear with it. Before we left I sighted in the zeilklein and at a hundred yards it was doing 1 1/2" groups. Stupid idea to want to change, so thanks alot to you folks for changing my mind. Big Bear
