Colt Python value

I have a 357 Magnum Colt Python handed down by my dad which is nickel plated and has pearl handels. According to the serial number, it dates back to around 1968. It is in good condition, and I am wanting to find out a ballpark figure on it's worth.

    I always wanted a Python and finally bought one, but am stuck in a quandry. I need some help from the experts out there...please.

    Here is what I have:

    Serial number dates it to 1961. 6" barrel with the lands in GREAT shape. There is some slight holster wear on the muzzle and a 1/4" patch on the front of the trigger guard. Pachmyr grips and no box. There is no wobble in the cylinder...yet.

    Here is my quandry:

    I have never considered myself a collector, but rather a shooter. I paid just under $600 for it and based on what I have seen in the auctions, it seems to be a fair price. In 7 years it hits that 50 year old mark. Will the value increase enough to justify storing it or can I use it as a shooter, hopping that if I load low velocity 158 grain loads that I won't screw it up?

    Tad welcome to the forums. One man's good condition is another mans fair condition if you get my drift--we really need pics to give you an accurate price but a WAG would be anywhere from $800 to $1500. Also are the stocks really pearl or are they ivory-or fake pearl ivory? There is a sticky on the front page on how to post pics. Pythons are worth money and the earlier ones really command a premium if they are in excellent shape. Do you still have the original box too as that increases value?

    some of the shorter pythons came with these style grips and colt licensed jay scott to sell them aftermarket. these grips aren't "proper" on my 6" but i like 'em, and that's all that matters.[;)] python prices are high right now, so a lnib would probably run $1400-1500 with box and paperwork/manual.

    I have a six in. nickel plated one that dates to 1981 mine is new in the box. I was told a fair asking price is $1500.00 One way to check to see if they are true pearls is to rub the grip lightly on the bottom of your top teeth if they are real it will feel rough, if the are fake they will feel smooth. Make sure your gun is uloaded before you try it though..
