I feel pretty dumb but can anyone tell me what an AR-15 lighting link is I saw it on ebay and figured the best place to find out was here

Your question is like asking, "I need some new cars; what should I get?" HUGE topic, the answer depends on your needs, & probably can't be satisfactorily answered on a forum limited to 10 responses.

Let me suggest you start by buying an inexpensive paperback, "The AR-15 Complete Owner's Guide" by Walt Kuleck. Lots of history, but also good basic information that will help you understand what questions to ask.

Then, use the Search feature on this forum (upper right corner) & do a search on "AR". We discuss AR's every week, so you can probably find hundreds of questions asked & answered, many of which you will have. Don't be discouraged by contradictory answers; every one has different opinions, & no one is wrong.

There are several websites that will help you. Check out www.ar15.com, Fulton Armory's website, & Rock River Arms website. All good reading.

I don't even like ARs and found a reason to buy 4 of them - and I still could use another or two. Instead of exactly what brand to buy I'll post the general style and purpose, maybe that will help.

I have a 24" heavy barreled target version with Magpul target stock for bench shooting. I have a 14.5" (16" with pinned FH) shorty with a 7.5" ACE stock for the CQB look (for me CQB stands for "Close Quarters Barbeque)and a 16" 7.62X39 with a full sized ACE stock for general shooting. I also have a 5.56 20" heavy barreled upper for switching out on the 7.62X39 rifle in case I want to do some "sort of" target shooting and travel light.

I have a POF 308 carbine - ACE stock with DPMS 16" barreled upper for general shooting. I should buy a 24" heavy barreled upper in 308 for serious target shooting, I suppose that's next.

One of the issues to confront with ARs is the overwhelming choice of products and you have to be careful to not try (and pay for) 3 or 4 different versions of a part before you decide what you like. Although very different guns, mine have certain parts in common such as ambi safety, extended bolt release (I shoot left handed) 1913 steel gas block, RRA 2 stage trigger and the ACE skeleton stock on all except the target AR. They are also all flat tops and all scoped. I don't like the red dot sights, I'll use a small 1 to 4X scope instead.

If an upper is going to be used on a specific lower only (such as the 24" target) I'll bed the upper so there's no "shake & rattle". I'm told it makes no difference but bolt action shooter that I am I don't like it and want my AR to feel like one rifle, not two halves bolted together.

I guess if I were going to have 3 ARs I'd have a little 5.56 version, a target 5.56 version and a 20" 308 version - you can branch off from there I think.

An AR in .308 is a AR10 or the the name specific to the company making it. There is no such thing as an AR15 in .308.

I agree with NMYERS in what he said above get the book or one similar and figure out what you plan on doing with it and go from there.

Welcome to the forum Jpatrik. I don't think you will find too many on this forum that are shy about sharing their thoughts and ideas about how to spend your money. Have fun! You cannot go wrong with a good AR or two...or three.
