putting together long range AR, scope?

I am putting together a 24" bull barrel AR and would like a quality turret scope but I cannot afford a NightForce. Am looking in the $600-$800 range if possible. Will be shooting 200-600yd targets. What other good options are out there at that price? What objective size would be best for these ranges...40mm, 50mm?

    Concering objective size considerations; larger objectives are more about light gathering then anything else. If you are shooting in lower light conditions like dusk/dawn then they are the way to go. Otherwise they really don't do much for you except force you to mount the scope higher. Leupold will add turrets to any of their scopes and there are several that should work fine in their VX2 or VX3 line of scopes.....

    How much power am I going to need for the 500-600yd shots? SWFA offers a nice SS scope in 3-9x42 but is 9 high enough magnification?

    You will need at least 12x on the high end, and preferrably 20x, or better...but with good resolution is a must.

    I have a Burris signature select (4-16 x 44) on my 20" AR. It is clear as a bell out to the 500-600 yd range. I haven't ventured a shot at the 1000 yd range with it yet but I can plainly see the gongs out there. At 1000 yds I would be limited more by the ballistics of the .223 than the power of the scope.

    Talking to the folks that regularly shoot the 1000 yd range, they dial back their 20X scopes due to the mirage effect.

    I would go higher than 9X but personally I don't think you need a 20X scope to effectively shoot at 500 - 600 yds. 12X would probably work, but I would go in the 14x-16x range.

    EDIT: And I would highly recommend the Burris line of scopes. Very satisfied with the quality vs the price.

    Look at the Vortex Diamondback or Viper lines. They range from $300-$600. They are exceptional optics for the price. Now, if you wanted to go whole hog, you could look at their Razor...but that one runs between $2200 and $2500 depending on options.

    Forgot to add, they are Japanese parts and American hand fitted in Wisconsin. Very quality oriented. I've looked through top to bottom on their scopes and they have an outstanding line-up.
