anyone make a 5.7MM bolt action rifle

Does anyone make a 5.7MM bolt action rifle? Any ideas what velocity one would get from a 20 to 22 inch barrel? Should be in the Hornet class only rimless.

    FN announced a few years ago that it was going to chamber a bolt-action rifle in this caliber, but I don't think anything ever came of it.

    (The FN 5.7 bolt action rifles are probably sitting in a bin with CZ's new production 5mm rifles [;)] )

    So far as I know there are no production 5.7x28mm bolt action rifles, though there is now a dedicated AR-15 upper out that takes the 50-round PS90 mags. You can also get a custom barrel in 5.7x28 for your Thompson-Center pistol or rifle.

    Apparently there have been some custom bolt-action conversions using .22 hornet rifles. The 5.7 uses standard .224 bullets, which is nice.

    As to ballistics, that will depend on the load, but as a starting point, it will give you about 2300fps with a 32 grain bullet from the milspec FN carbine, which only has a 10" barrel.

    I've seen a quote of 2600 fps using the 35 grain V-max bullets from the 16" bbl civilian carbine. You might be able to crank out 2800 fps from a 20-22" bbl, which as you say, puts you pretty close to the Hornet round.

    As soon as I write this, someone will come up with an exception, I'm sure...

    I don't know of any commercial bolt action rifles being manufactured for the 5.7 x 28 cartridge. Pistol cartridges present a whole different realm of geometry and case management due to size. Standard length/diameter bolts and actions are a tad cumbersome for these smaller cartridges. The 5.7 cartridge is a 'basterd' rim size also which means that the small standard bolt face of 0.378" will have to be bushed down in size. Enter the machinations of feeding.

    I'm sure that there are smaller scale actions that might be easier to work with but I find that I can accomplish most things better by using the .221 Fireball.

    I am surprised that Cooper has not picked this round up in their model 38. It might not have the merits they require for it though, and necking it down to 17 would be fairly similar to their old 17 CCM

    I bet if you asked them nicely, they might make you one.

    The 5.7 is very interesting.

    You are on to something, and we have discussed this before. I agree that this round should be strongly considered for a nice bolt action rifle. It should fall nicely between the .22 WMR and the .22 Hornet, with close to Hornet performance it seems.

    I am with you Steve, they could neck it down the 20 cal or 17 cal as wildcats too...brass would be easy enough and it would kick up the performance. I will have to give Cooper a call, a repeater on the Model 38 would be perfect.

    Cooper is not much into repeater's. The rigidy provided by a solid bottomed action, is a lot of what gives them the accuracy they have...not just claim. About the only repeating model 38 I know of, is the 17, and 22 CCM's that the OLD Cooper made. Their Model 52, which is a full length 30-06 sized action is available in repeater form, as is their rimfires.

    I currently have a Model 38 Montana Varminter in 17 remington Fireball. On a calm day it will put 3 shots thru the same hole at 100 yards with Remington Premier ammo...and I don't mean a clover leaf, or ragged hole...just barely bigger than the bullet. It is the most accurate rifle I own.

    I seen a Remington XR-100 in 223 that would perform almost as well, and it was all factory...once again solid bottom reciever, single shot.

    Cooper recently announced a new model, which is the Model 54, based on the .308 Winchester case, and includes 22-250, .243, .250 Savage, .260 Remington, 7mm-08, and .308. Like the Model 52, it is a repeater. It and other Coopers are on my wishlist, for a number of reasons, including their reputation for fine accuracy, as well as excellent design and engineering.

    Cooper: Keep up the good work. I will eventually buy at least one or two of your rifles when we can be assured that Obama is going down in flames!!!! Then, we will know that the economy and small business have a fighting chance.

    Now we're getting WAY off topic, but I'm not sure what Obama has to do with this.

    If the economy sucks and you're strapped for cash (like everyone else), that I can understand. But if you can afford the guns and want them, go buy. You're probably going to end up on a waiting list anyway. . .so maybe if you're lucky you'll have them before Obama is gone. [;)]

    If you're worried about another Clinton-style gun ban under the Obama administration, don't be. Despite a lot of fears of this a year ago, ultimately Obama doesn't have the votes for it, Nancy Pelosi has already admitted as much (that gun control is off her agenda for now), and its simply not going to happen in the foreseeable future.
