Pre64 Mod. 70 butt plates

I have a M70 300H&H that was made in the late days of production (SN is 553005, which I understand puts it around 1962). The gun is in orgininal condition except (I think) the butt plate which does not look quite right. The plate is hard plastic. It looks very much like the metal butt plates on older guns (checkered pattern with diamonds around screws), BUT it does not have a Winchester logo, and it is a tiny bit undersized for the stock (although it is fitted into the original screw holes in stock). I'd like to put a proper butt plate on the gun if this is not the correct one, but I don't know what I should be looking for. Can anyone out there inform me of the correct style butt plate for a M70 of this late vintage, or steer me to a reference book on the subject?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Winchester used a plastic butt plate in 1962 and it did not have any writing on it just checkering. It would also be correct for the butt plate to be slightly undersized (the wood is slightly proud). My only question is, did winchester put a recoil pad on these late magnum guns??

    Without being able to see the butt plate it is hard to say if it has been replaced. I would say from what you have described that it is correct. If it is a slight bit smaller than the stock it is probably a good way to be fairly certain that the stock has not been sanded for a refinish. Iwould be much more wary if it had a pad installed.

    My 1961 .264 has a butt plate exactly as you describe. It is origional. It also has a slight curve to it.

    Much Thanks to all of you who responded. I guess it is more "original" than I had expected. Now, if I can only come up with the $ for that darned book!

    Welcome. I have a '52 with the aluminum plate. Hell of a gun. 270.

    Yours should be a Featherweight and later in 1952 production as the featherweight came out mid '52. My .308 is just about mid year production...my 300 H&H has an aftermarket pad of '52 vintage. The original '52 production was a metal pad. Cartod knows his pre-64 70's.
    Kingfisher, welcome. Rule and Whiticker books can be found on sleazebay at times and go for 200-300/ea. The only way I got mine many years ago and the prices have only gone up.
