ar 15 uppers and bcg
I just purchased an ar 15 with an m/a match grade upper ,I was told this.I purchased a 16 in colt upper for the gun as the other is 20 in.The question is the colt upper didn't have the bcg can I just use the bcg for the other upper when I swap uppers.

While a true in-spec upper may be possible to do that, and I'm not saying it isn't, I was just pointing out that there is a possibility of it happening. Certainly a quick check with a set of go/nogo gauges would be prudent any time you change or create a new combination of things that control headspace.0 -

There seems to be a common theory that an AR upper set up and headspaced with an in spec bolt will be fine with any other in spec bolt. It may be good enough for government work but I'm skeptical. I have also purchased incomplete uppers and added the bcg, but in both occasions, I used brand new name brand bcg's with a new upper. I think some of the sellers are cheating their buyers by buying complete uppers and then selling the bcg separately to make a few more $$. My opinion is that it's not a "complete" upper if it doesn't include the bcg/charge handle. I recently bought a couple of new bcg's due to this trend, but I won't buy an upper and then pay extra for the bcg from the same seller. 0 -
I'd get another bolt carrier group for the match upper you have, use the match one with match ammo, and the other one for plinking with cheapo ammo. Since it is a match upper, I'd have it checked for proper functioning and headspacing. 0 -
the bcg i have is for the match upper,okay so i just need a new bcg and to have it head spaced for the colt upper,i'm afraid to shoot it in the colt upper 0 -
Headspacing a new, undamaged AR/M16 type rifle is unnecessary. If you have a Colt barrel and upper receiver assembly, installed by the factory, any MILSPEC bolt/carrier group will suffice.
To further the aspect of parts fit, if you can get an unused Colt bolt/carrier group, the rifle will be 'dialed in'. Here's why:
Colt assemblers have to pull random uppers from the assembly line to test for headspace (and meet contractual requirements), but the percentage of rejection is just about zero. Remember: the bolt/carrier group the assemblers are putting into a new Colt upper group at the factory comes from the same parts-bin as the BCG you will be sliding into your upper receiver.
If you can't get Colt, there will be no problem provided you get known, US MILSPEC quality replacement parts.
All of the above is assuming you have a Colt factory upper barrel/receiver assembly that's both new, and un-messed with. Best, Joe
