Rebarrell of Savage 99?

I have two Savage 99's. One is a 300Savage that shoots well, the other is a 250/3000 that I just can't get to hold a pattern. I've cleaned it very thoroughly, checked the muzzle can't seem to find anything that screams problem. It is a 1-14 twist and have tried many 87 grain bullets.

These are used guns that are used to hunt, they were handed down. I think the 300 is a takedown, not the 250. Lever/switch on the forearm.

Anyway, how difficult is it to replace the barrel. Does anyone make a drop in barrel. It would be a handy little rifle with a 22 or 20 inch barrel. Same caliber.

I did try a different scope, it has a one piece base. The receiver had to be tapped. I should check that out, what would be the best way to check on that?

I had a gunsmith check rifling last summer, thought it looked crisp. Did not say anything about crown, should have asked. I will try some different loads, will try a 75 grain bullet as well. I'll make sure I push them hard enough this time, was trying to set bullet out. Probably lowering pressure too much. I do have a chrono now as well. The weather right now is conducive to reloading(read as crappy).

    I have an old model 99 in 250 Savage that shoots really good (hunting purposes) and to the naked eye it appears the rifling is shot out of it. I have only used commercial ammo in it. On the other hand I have a model 99F in 300 Savage that does not shoot as well as I would expect. If your 250 Savage is scoped, have you made sure that is not part of the problem?

    You might want to try a lighter bullet to see if that will help out any....

    no drop in barrels made for these. not that hard to rebarrel,can be done. will have to stay with same cartridge to minimize feed problems

    I bought a 250 Savage with a shot-out barrel. I took it to a smith and had it rebored to .277 and rechambered to a .270 Savage (.277 bullet in a .300 Savage case). It shoots like a dream - 1"-1.5" groups at 100 yds with a tang peep sight. It's a handload-only gun which is no problem for me, but you may want to consider it. It's a GREAT game cartridge for deer and antelope sized game.

    first you dident say how it was shooting.dose it start out ok and as it gets warm it losses its pattern or what. double check the crown.make sure of the forearm pressure on the barrel, the best way to check the scope is with a laser. if you are to rebarrel make sure you find a smith with 99 expierence!

    Trying to troubleshoot your problem via the internet is nearly impossible because you haven't given us anything close to enough information and that will take a lot of time and dozens of questions.

    If I were to hazard a WAG, I would have to think that you were under loading the cartridge/bullet combination and you're seeing a problem. The 87 gr. bullets need to be driven at 3,000 FPS in order to be stable and you might be below that.

    Conversely, you may not have arrived at an acceptable load in the first place. I don't care how many bullets you've tried, you may not have hit on the right combination with the right powder.

    The average shooter isn't equipped to examine a rifle barrel thoroughly or understand what they should be looking for in the first place. I suggest taking it to a gunsmith for an exam and see what he says. It's possible that a new crown could make all the difference in the world or a more thorough cleaning of the grooves...

    Rebarreling is possible but you need to stick with the same cartridge as the spool magazine is cartridge specific. Find a gunsmith familiar with the Savage to save yourself the agony of someone learning on your rifle.
