Garand ejects clip on 7th shot

Greetings: We had a CMP Garand match at the club Sunday and one of the competitors had a rifle that fairly consistently ejected the clip (and 8th round) on the 7th shot. I believe there is an easy fix to this but can't remember what it is. Too lazy to do the research I thought I'd ask if any of you folks know off the top of your head?? I've got the guy's rifle and promised I get it straightened out. Thanks in advance.

    I imaging the heavier spring is just making up for some excessive wear somewhere on the latch, but it was a very cheap, very simple fix.

    The weapon is out of time.
    My Winchester M1 needed a pin & handful of other small parts replaced when it had same symptoms (only @ the 3rd round). Took the guy <30 mins to R&R everything, & he charged me about $25 total.

    Runs great now.

    Here's an easy way to find out if the clip latch spring is the offending part - remove the spring, stretch it out as much as you can and re-install it in the rifle. If this cures things (and it probably will) you've isolated the problem.

    This is only a temporary fix; then you'll need to buy and install a new spring. The one that Don talks about will do just fine. Good luck.

    First off, see if the clip release needs to be cleaned.

    Remove the stock group, and drive out the clip-release pin. The clip release and the spring will fall free.

    Now, just about every M1 I've seen, had storage grease, or other junk under the clip-latch gumming up the clip latches movement.

    Clean above mentioned area, re-assemble, and do a function test by cycling rounds. It may only be the gunk under the clip latch, and, if so, you needn't go any further. It's the first place to examine. Best, Joe

    My experience with my Garands doing this has always been the notch on the clip itself not being deep enough. I had a batch of greek cmp ammo that had very shallow clip notches.
