tarnished colt
I have a colt commander that has been sitting in a leather holster for many years. The gun has a stainless finish and it looks like the leather has tarnished the finish of the firearm by staining parts of the slide brown. Is this common and can the tarnish be easily removed? Thanks, Jim.

I would try some Flitz metal polish on it, rubbing gently to see if the residue will come off. 0 -
Copper tarnishes, brass tarnishes, & silver tarnishes, but steel doesn't
it rusts. Stainless steel is more accurately called "stain resistant steel", as, under the right conditions, it WILL rust.
Damage to guns from leather holsters used to be common, less so now that word has gotten around that the chemicals used to tan leather are corrosive.
But, first you want to be sure that you don't just have transfer of leather stain, as opposed to rust. I'd try different solvents, such as mineral spirits, acetone, or MEK. If they don't work, try a low abrasive cleaner like Flitz. I'm sure the others on the forum will have suggestions.
If nothing else works, then there is always steel wool, grades 0 to 0000. Problem with steel wool is that it smoothes & polishes, making it difficult to blend in a matte finish. Might help if you post photos.

How many years? What kind of Commander? What "stainless FINISH?"
The reason I ask is that there are a lot of early Combat Commanders in satin nickel plate that is mistaken for stainless. Too heavy polish will cut through the plating as it would not on solid stainless.0
