218 Bee/22Hornet for whitetail/hogs

Is either of these calibers enough to cleanly kill a Texas whitetail or hog with a well placed shot. I know you can kill alot of things with a gun that's not intended for that particular purpose, but are these just varmint rounds?

    Both the 218 Bee and the 22 Hornet are great varmint cartridges (my preference is for the 22 Hornet), but neither is adequate for deer and pigs (unless you can put the bullet in their ear with every shot).

    Thank you. I have heard alot of people rant about the 22 hornet but I don't want a gun just for varmints as I do not target them and can use the rifles I already own if I do get a chance to hunt them. But I understand now that there not sufficient for larger game-thank you.

    If you want the ultimate rifle that can be used for deer & pigs, and can double duty as a varmint rifle, there is very little that can compare to the .243 Winchester cartridge.

    Thats one of my babies but most recntly I have been having great results with a 25-06 I picked up.I totally agree that the 243 which I have expereince with it a great round. Thanks again

    I'm totally in agreement with Bert H.

    Even though a lot of big hogs are killed in slaughter houses every day with a 22LR, the shot is precisely placed, in the brain.

    If you are able to dicipline yourself to hold only for certain shots, and know your limits, every time, then these cartridges are fine. I have killed deer with 22WMR, 17 HMR, 17 Fireball, 22 Hornet, and 223. These are not for beginner's or ones who do not know the limits of their equipment, or themselve's. Bullet construction and placement are a big part of it too. If you want to do a BEHIND the shoulder shot with a small caliber, you need a well constructed bullet like a Barnes TSX, or Nosler Partition, to make sure if you hit bone you will get thru it, and get to the vital's.

    So, the best thing for most, is the 243 Winchester, and on up. However, no amount of power replaces knowing your limits, and good shot placement.

    "is either of these calibers enough to cleanly kill a Texas whitetail or hog with a well placed shot."......in short no......but a lot have been. The #1 all time cal. for shooting whitetails in Wis. is .........the .22 l.r. (but the target is usualy stationary and well lit[;)])

    I wouldn't go with anything smaller than the 243 Win...and personally I like the 7MM Mauser and 308 Win.
