fireworks coming out of 1917 when fired
Purchased a "Model of 1917" rifle from CMP. Used the normal 30-06 surplus ammo I use in my Garand. Fired the rifle three times. Each time, flame lept from the barrel and small pieces of burning debris shot out with the round. Previously, when I cleaned the barrel I did notice some type of fiber like cotton coming out although it was not really visible looking down the barrel. I am curious if anyone else has encountered this phenomenon.

Sounds like unburnt powder.Could be weak primers causing it.Pull some bullets and reload the powder and bullets in a freshly primed case and see if it still does it. How long is the barrel? Were you shooting at dusk or a dark cloudy day? Mosin-Nagant shooters have this happen with the short barrelled carbines even in bright light with the heavy ball ammo that probably uses a slower burning powder. Not to worry.Unless it's sparks from copper plated steel jackets rubbing through going down the barrel. The cotton looking material could be from your patch if you have a rough bore. I have a rifle with a real ugly bore that tears strands out of my cotton patches.I also have a batch of 303 british ammo with weak primers and pulled some bullets and reloaded them with the powder in a freshly primed case and they are right on now. 0 -
probably a very rough bore (the cmp/m-1917's where noted for this). the greek .30/06 the cmp sells has a copper plated steel jacketed bullet and will 'spark' in a rough bore. 0 -
Thanks, I think that explains the cotton fibers!
Any danger in the copper sparks?

Good Call. Any safety issues with this?

As far as safety I guess just use common sense.Ps,copper won't spark. It's the steel under the copper but you knew that. 0 -
"Good Call. Any safety issues with this?".........only if it is very dry, fire hazard. 0
