Krag Italian Walnut?

I needed a replacement hand guard for my 1898 Krag that is using a 1901 rear sight. Found this one on the locally for $45 and I thought I'd take a chance. I was surprised by how light it is in comparison to the rifle. I think the guard is original. The rivets look good, but rather than an intial there is a number stamped on the underside. The guard had been used on a sporterized rifle so it has been sanded reducing the rivet depth slightly. Is it Italian Walnut? Should I stain it to more closely match the rifle. or leave it alone? Thanks

    Hello, Trees vary quite a bit in color, even within the same species. Also alot of wood darkens with age and contact with solvents, linseed oil and human sweat. Most likely your handguard is just newer American walnut. You will have to srip the finish off to stain it. Stain a spot on the inside first to see if you have the color you want. You can always go darker, but once it is on there making it lighter is difficult. Good luck!-JOHN
